Well, the market has spoken. I've got a few things I still want to do to make this car just right and I guess now I have time to make it happen.
Well, I've run out of time to get everyone an answer on the keys. Just got off the phone with Mercedes-Benz and the keys they promised me are no longer available - I'm feeling like quite the arse right now. Sorry guys, really sorry. I just don't know what to say. Making the current keys work in the glove box is simple. The tailgate not so much, but it can be done if needed
Alright guys. Here’s a longer driving video. If you look real closely you can see the tailgate lock is now working as does everything else in the wagon with the exception of the key in the tailgate and glove box. I can’t be sure since the keys I have are aftermarket copies, but I’m suspecting they are copies of a valet key. I have 2 new keys on order from Mercedes that may or may not arrive before the auction ends, and they may or may not fix the issue. https://youtu.be/vt_UikFl1Ck?si=4IyuYygcXZQpfl1F
@cmpesson most of your questions are answered in the pictures and videos posted(see my previous comments), but to answer all of your questions: the only issue with any of your questions is the door locks. The tailgate lock does not work, but that’s my project for today. Once I have the tailgate back together I’ll post a long driving and walk around video showing cruise, stable temp, door locks, climate control functions ( a/c won’t exactly be a as good test since it’s cold out, but I can show that the system is full and the auxiliary fan runs, compressor was replaced just last month though). You will also see the cruise working, but cruise in these old things is not exactly smooth.
Here’s a video of the door locks in operation. You’ll see that the trunk does not lock. I’m looking into that this afternoon. I don’t lock my cars so I’m just glad the rest of the locks work. https://youtube.com/shorts/9SdgXnKI-YI?si=TJTjWDpN9NSc7ZMI
@thembmarketthank you. For those of you that peruse the service history pdf there are some ROs with incorrect dates. That is due to an issue we had when we changed point of sales systems. We did not do any work on the vehicle in 1961. There are also several work orders without mileage, sorry. I get lazy when writing up my own cars. I never really expect to sell anything I have so I haven’t been great at record keeping for myself. I can provide individual invoices upon request if anyone is looking for more detail.
@TintinI wish I had a good answer for you, but it appears the odometer discrepancy happened shortly before I came into the picture. There were a few services performed with an odometer reading of about 228,000 in 2001 and the first time I saw the car the odometer read 211692 in 2010 . I bought this wagon from a customer that was moving to Connecticut with no garage. The wagon was his fathers car for many years before that, but his father passed before I entered the picture so I don't have the full story. I do know, however, that the vehicle has been in Decatur GA for a long time and sat for a while around the time that the previous owner's father passed. I have a neighbor that was friends with the owner of the vehicle and remembers both the wagon and the owner fondly. All hearsay, but still interesting to me. On another Carfax note. I just got off the phone with NICB regarding the theft report. There emailed response is below: Good afternoon, Thank you for your inquiry to the NICB. The VIN you have provided to us has been run in our database and shows no record of being reported stolen. We will contact Carfax to have them update the theft flag from their report. This should take 2 to 3 working days. NICB has no further information on this vehicle; theft status is all we provide. @Daniel75the rust in the right rear is shown in picture 239. There is a small hole at the back of the wheel well and a small crack that goes along the side of the tow hook. The rust was treated inside and out and primed and painted. Repair is from about 2 years ago.
@Daniel75 - I don’t have any information on the 2 wrecks before my time (I have owned the wagon since 2010). The 3 in my care were a hit in run by an AT&T truck at a light. Left front was grazed. The next was when a driver backed the wagon into a car in a parking lot. The final was a front end collision. Right front -bumper, hood, fender, right headlamp were replaced and inner fender was straightened. No frame damage and vehicle was driven 7 hours home from Memphis to Atlanta for repairs. All repairs were done with OE parts. The final accident is what resulted in the full repaint and cosmetic restoration. All trim and glass was removed for repaint. Everything was either replaced or refinished before reinstallation. I also took the opportunity to refinish the wood, replace the carpet, and rebuild the back seat. I rebuilt the front seats shortly after I bought the car about 40,000 miles ago. Car has been mostly sitting since the work was completed in 2022 with occasional washing and exercise runs.
