This 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL Carat Duchatelet was originally ordered for the Denmark market and modified by Duchatelet for the Japanese market. The car is finished in Midnight Blue (904) over a Royal Blue Leather (272) interior and powered by a 5.6L V8 M117 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Notable features include heated front and rear seats, reclining rear seats, a power sunroof, Cartier crystal clock, Carat branded TV/AV system in the dashboard, two integrated car phones, automatic climate control, and a Carat branded steering wheel and gauge cluster. This Carat shows 28k kilometers (~17k miles) on the odometer and is now offered by the selling dealer with one factory key, Carat interior locking keys, importation documents, and a clean Florida title.
The body is finished in Midnight Blue (904) and features grey lower cladding and European-spec bumpers and headlamps. Factory 560SEL badging remains in place on the decklid with an additional Carat Duchatelet plaque showing the “Clarity” trim name. The hood emblem, parking pole, and trunk badging are finished in gold and the original boomerang-style TV antenna remains mounted to the decklid. Exterior features include a power sunroof, power adjustable side mirrors, headlight wipers, and chrome trim accents on the bumpers, window frames, and door handles. The seller believes the passenger rear door to have been previously repainted based on higher paint meter readings but no signs of damage can be found. Detailed photos of the exterior are included in the gallery and paint meter readings are viewable in the gallery.
Centra alloy wheels measuring 16”x8” have been added as part of the Carat treatment. The faces feature a machined finish with center caps showing gold emblems. The wheels show various minor scuffs and imperfections in the finish. Tires shown are believed to be original Pirelli Cinturato P7’s measuring 205/55 at all four corners. The tires show 3 digit date codes (standard for tires prior to year 2000) which are believed to be from 1986 and 1987, and each tire is showing cracks in the sidewalls.
The cabin is trimmed in Royal Blue Leather (272) with color-matched door inserts and carpets. Burl wood veneers accent the dashboard and center console from the factory with additional Burl wood added by Carat to the door cards and clock surround in the center console. White lace upper seat covers have been added to the front seats displaying the Mercedes emblem in blue embroidery and Carat modifications include two car phones, a Carat-branded TV, a VHS player located in the rear seat center armrest, a Cartier clock in the center console, and the Carat logo embossed in the leather on the center console. Factory features include heated front and rear seats, reclining rear seats, a power sunroof, and automatic climate control. A Royal Blue leather-trimmed steering wheel featuring the Carat embossing is shown.
Carat-specific instrumentation replaces factory dials and includes a 160-mph speedometer and 7k-rpm tachometer as well as a clock and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 28k kilometers (~17k miles).
The fuel-injected 5.6-liter M117 V8 was factory rated at 238 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque when new with power sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The rear main seal is noted to have a leak along with the rear SLS pump.
This Carat shows 28k kilometers (~17k miles) on the odometer and is now offered by the selling dealer with one factory key, Carat interior locking keys, importation documents, and a clean Florida title. The original Carat Japan LTD keychain will also come with the car and is pictured in the gallery.
A video below provides a walk around, interior tour, and engine idling footage.
Carat Duchatelet was synonymous with opulence, extravagance, and luxury throughout the 1980's and while that name and image continues today, the cars of the previous generation seem to evoque the most emotion. These cars are bespoke creations imagined by the artists at Carat Duchatelet with the customer's needs and lifestyle in mind. This Clarity spec Carat has a lot going for it. To start, it has incredibly low mileage and we can appreciate the original tires remaining on the car which help to further document the mileage along with the service records. Even a standard 560SEL in Midnight Blue over Blue leather with this kind of mileage is a needle-in-a-haystack find, much less a Carat version. The Euro bumpers and lighting also add to the curb appeal along with the period correct Centra wheels optioned by Carat. From the mileage and condition to the colors and options of this W126, there's no denying this is one very special car.

Love that boomerang aerial! Totally 90s!!
Finding another 560SEL with this kind of mileage would be tough, but to be a Carat car too?! Will be watching this one closely
Agree on the midnight blue @motorderby. Midnight blue with palomino is the color combination for my W201 and I absolutely love it. A very small number of W201s also received this same conversion. This car is stunning. I wish the seller good luck and I hope it goes to a great home.

Midnight Blue over blue interior is one of my favorite combinations – beautiful car, glws!
Saw this car in person. It is all there like on day one when it was delivered new. A true time capsule. Will be following this sale very closely
Stellar car and dead-cool retro throwback. Wish I could add this one to the stable...GLWTA!
@Bert Indeed it is, car carries a very unique aura. The belief in Japan that everything is alive, resonates with this car.
