This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 220D was acquired by the current owner and seller in 2003 and has been maintained as a driving example since. Finished in Dark Green over Bamboo MB-Tex (704), power is provided by a naturally aspirated 2.2-liter inline-4 diesel paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include narrow bumpers, an exterior drivers side mirror, paint-matched hub caps, and an AM/FM radio with integrated tape deck. Recent services for this 220D include a new vacuum diaphragm and fuel sender, new starter switch, new sway bar links, engine mounts, transmission mount, brake hoses, new radiator thermostat, new front and rear flex discs, new water pump, and a new alternator belt. The current owner has added approximately 18k miles since 2003 and the odometer shows 89k with true mileage unknown. This example is offered with service records, an original tool kit, two keys, and a clean Florida title.
The body was refinished in Dark Green paint in 2006 with the original color noted as Dark Olive (291) as indicated on the data plaque on the radiator support. All the original trim appears to be present and the glass is all original as well with no signs of cracks or pitting. Exterior features include an antenna, a driver’s side wing mirror, polished windshield washer nozzles, and MB grille badges. The exterior shows light patina along with paint blemishes to the right rear quarter panel. Detailed photos are highlighted in the gallery below.
This example shows original 14x5.5” wheels wrapped in Delta Majestic whitewall tires measuring 185/75 on all four corners. Paint matched Dark Green hubcaps remain in good shape with minor fading. Recent service includes new sway bar links and brake hoses.
The cabin is upholstered in Bamboo MB-Tex across the seats, door cards, armrests, and head rests. The cabin received a refurbishment under the current owner's care in 2006 including new carpets, seat covers, seat belts, and center console. In 2011 the headliner was replaced with OEM material. The center console features controls for the factory air conditioning and heat. The original Becker Europa radio has been replaced with an AM/FM unit with integrated tape deck. The front seats are manually adjusted along with the front and rear windows. A crack in the dash is noted and photographed in the gallery. The seller notes the radio, A/C, and in-dash clock are inoperable.
The original black steering wheel is protected by a newer padded cover and frames VDO instrumentation including a 110-mph speedometer, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. Set between the two gauges is a quartz-movement clock. The odometer shows 89k miles, approximately 18k of which have been added by the seller. The odometer is noted as inoperable and mileage status should be regarded as true mileage unknown.
The 2.2L OM615 Diesel 4-Cylinder is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. Output was rated at 59 horsepower and 96 lb-ft of torque when new. Recent service includes a new vacuum diaphragm and fuel sender, new starter switch, new sway bar links, engine mounts, transmission mount, brake hoses, new radiator thermostat, new front and rear flex discs, new water pump, and a new alternator belt.
This example is offered with service records, an original tool kit, two keys, and a clean Florida title.
For decades this utilitarian sedan has been the more economical option to the more collectible W108 and seemingly lingered in the Sonderklasse shadow for too long. In recent years a younger crowd has found themselves drawn to the size and affordability of the W114’s. The Dark Green paint over Bamboo is a very striking color combination and remains highly desirable on any chassis. It's apparent this 220D, while showing ample patina, has been loved across multiple owners and seems to have decades of drives left. There’s a lot to like about this specific example, maybe most of all we enjoy seeing a well sorted driver-spec car with three pedals. While it’s no performance sedan, these cars symbolize Mercedes-Benz style and reliability from a time when technology wasn’t king but build quality and comfort reigned supreme.

Thank you.
@Jim_Rosenthal AC was working once upon a time, but not very well, as you said. It is not working anymore, so I usually roll down the windows.
Very well-preserved car... I remember these as new vehicles. Bearing in mind that Mercedes factory AC in that era wasn't exactly freezing, does the AC work? Thank you.
