This 1982 Mercedes-Benz 380SEL Limousine Project shows 33k miles (TMU) and was reportedly acquired by the seller in August 2022 out of New Mexico with previous registrations shown in Colorado, Kentucky, and Ohio. The car is finished in Black (040) over Gray Leather (238) and power is provided by a 3.8-liter V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Original features include BBS wheels, a rear glass sunroof, an intercom system, and a power rear bench. The car reportedly runs and drives but is in need of some mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment. This 380SEL Limousine Project is now being offered by the seller at No Reserve with a clean Carfax report and a clean Florida title.
This 380SEL received a stretch conversion prior to the current owners acquisition with little known about the builder or history. The car is finished in Black (040) paint showing fading, cracking, and clear coat failure. Exterior features specific to the conversion include a rear glass sunroof, a vinyl-clad side applique showing the Mercedes-benz emblem in gold, extended rear doors, and a boomerang-style TV antenna on the trunk. Additional exterior features include European front headlamps and marker lamps, gold badging on the decklid, and paint-matched lower cladding. The body shows scratches and paint defects and the rubber seals around the glass show cracking and shrinking. The paint on the roof is lifting around the front sunroof.
Aftermarket 15” BBS wheels showing black-painted faces are mounted with Dunlop tires measuring 205/65 at all four corners. The paint on the faces is faded and the BBS center caps show modern Mercedes logos. The tires show cracking and will need to be replaced.
The cabin is trimmed in original Gray Leather (238) showing significant fading and wear throughout. The headliner shows sagging and drooping in various trim panels as well as the pillar trim pieces. Original Burl wood trim can be seen throughout the cabin with extended trim panels in the rear cabin with cracking and fading noted. Notable interior features include power windows, a power rear bench, two sunroofs, and an intercom system. The cabin will require refurbishment as the carpet has been lifted from the floors in the rear exposing floor pans showing some surface corrosion.
Instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer as well as a clock and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows just over 33k miles with true mileage unknown denoted.
The 3.8L M116 V8 was rated at 155 horsepower when new, and power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. Photos of the engine bay and underside of the car are included in the gallery. The car is said to run and drive as is.
The Carfax report lists no accidents or damage, and registration history in Florida, Colorado, Kentucky, and Ohio. This 380SEL Limousine Project is now being offere at No Reserve with a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title.
A video has been provided below showing parts of the exterior, interior, and driving footage.

Is there any rear AC? Is the AC in the front working?
@Blakcar1 yes at the moment of the listing. Drove it around the neighborhood, did not get on the expressway.
Does the car actually drive? Transmission working shifts through all gears?

"The car is said to run and drive as is." Not sure how to interpret this statement.
If you pay attention to the detail and observe how the door panels and rear side panels are built, you can tell that this car has a lot more potential than what meets the eye and that a true effort has been invested in it. This is a car for the one that wants to have a fun, interesting project that will result in a very cool Pullman style Benz, to go out with some friends, to pick up conversations at car meets and even for a celebration. If you are a purist, are looking for an Autobahn cruiser or are looking for a factory pullman look at the other cars being auctioned here and be ready to drop 6 figures, instead of a couple of grand.
Wow! The undercarriage on this car is scary. Not sure if it's from the fabricator or just wear and tear/age, but note that a lot of the body plugs are missing, which is not good. I also like the fact that the coach builder (and I use that term loosely based on what I can see in the pictures) didn't bother with changing springs for the added load, but put spacers in them. ?!?!?!? I also like the loose wires/hoses and broad use of tie wraps to try and keep things anchored and off the ground. Project is a good word here, but there appears to be some serious issues with the undercarriage. Stretching a car is not just a matter of a Sawzall and a welder, there are considerations for the geometry of the chassis as well as the integrity of the structure. Not sure those were taken into account with this build. GLWA!
