This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE is finished in Black (040) over Beige MB-Tex and shows 65k miles on the odometer. Power is provided by a 2.8-liter M130 inline-six mated to a four-speed floor shift automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Equipment includes central locking, power windows, and air conditioning. Service records dating back to 2015 accompany the car and show thorough servicing including a transmission service, brake service, various seals and gaskets, ignition, and air conditioning. This 280SE is now offered for sale by the selling dealer on consignment from the current owner with manufacturer's literature, service manuals, an original Becker radio, a full-size spare, recent service records, and a clean Georgia title.
The exterior is finished in Black (040) with chrome trim lining the front and rear bumpers, beltline and windows. The body was reportedly repainted in the early 2000’s in the original Black paint. Some cracking and crazing can be seen across horizontal surfaces of the paint. The brightwork shows well without damage and the exhaust tips show surface rust. The glass is heat-insulating and has an electrically-heated rear pane.
The 14” steel wheels wear Uniroyal tires measuring 205/75 on all four corners with date codes from 2015. The wheels are fitted with chrome hub caps with body color centers and show some signs of wear and fading. The seller reports that new shocks were installed in 2015.
The cabin is upholstered in Beige MB-Tex and features wood veneer throughout. Under the right side of the windscreen the veneer shows cracking and warping with detailed photos shown in the gallery. Interior features include central locking, power windows, a Becker Europa II radio and automatic climate control with functioning air conditioning. The seating surfaces show well and are accented by black carpet, beige door cards, and a beige headliner.
VDO instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer which sits alongside gauges for fuel level as well as coolant and oil temperature with an analog clock mounted in the center. The analog odometer currently reads 65k miles with approximately 15k miles being added by the current owner.
Power is provided by a 2.8-liter M130 in line-six which is factory rated at 180 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. More than $15,000 has been spent on servicing and maintaining this example since 2015 with records showing thorough engine and gasket servicing, transmission servicing, ignition and fuel services and rebuilds, various bushing, suspension, and mounts, and A/C service. The records are shown in the gallery below.

Good morning all, thanks for the good comments and love for this 280SE thus far. As we get into the final day of bidding, let us know if there are lingering questions. We can't reinforce enough how great a driver this car is and how confident we are in the joy this will bring from behind the wheel. Best of luck to all!

Good morning everyone, thanks for your patience. We wanted to check with our team to make sure we had the right answer for the cable question re photo 101. We did have the speedo repaired prior to the auction running and the underside photos were taken simultaneously. There was a question we received regarding heater levels and ventilation. We've tested everything and it works well. Videos still coming. Thanks!

Thanks for answering my previous question. On photo #101, I don't know exactly what that part is and don't have time to fire up my WIS/ASRA to identify it. It looks like it has a speedometer cable going in and going out. The cable on the top appears to be cross-threaded. What is the device and does it work?
Good morning all, thank you for taking the time to check out this cool W108. While she appears lovingly worn, this is one of the best driving classics we've encountered in the last couple years. It's evident by looking at the records but more so from the driver's seat. We aim to have videos up within a day's time and look forward to good discussion around this one. It's important to note we are located just outside Atlanta and are happy to show the car by appointment within business hours. Best of luck to all bidding!
@sasdwe Fair question- that's on us. We were submitting as though it was a 3 speed. Confirmed it's a 4-speed car and can get transmission number photo for confirmation. Will also get with the powers here and have that adjusted. Thanks!
The gear selector shows 4 forward speeds. The narrative says this is a three-speed. Which is it? If not a 4-speed, why is there a 4-speed gear selector?
