This 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190/380 Schulz-Cabrio was ordered by and built for the 1982 Formula 1 Champion Keke Rosberg which was then registered in Monaco, Keke’s country of residence, in 1986. Keke Rosberg was a driver and brand representative of Schulz Tuning during this time in which he custom ordered this coach built 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190/380 Schulz-Cabrio which was shown during the Geneva Motor Show of that year and was finally delivered to Keke during the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft race at the Norisring in Nuremburg, Germany where he was racing a Porsche 956. Originally painted in Classic White (737) over Blue Fabric (052) interior paired with a M102 four cylinder gasoline engine, this W201 has undergone extensive modifications in period by Schulz Tuning converting what was a sedan into a two door cabriolet with a 3.8-liter M116 V8 engine complete with transmission and rear end from the donor. Utilizing a mostly in-house designed soft top with parts from a R107 SL, the top has an electro-pneumatic function. Other features include Ronal Penta wheels, heat and fresh air functions, a Blaupunkt head unit, custom ATIWE AMG steering wheel, steel reinforced chassis, Schulz Tuning speedometer, Recaro seats, widebody fenders, Schulz Tuning body kit, custom Schulz interior, and includes a Keke Rosberg helmet with thorough documentation with paperwork including manufacturer's literature. This Mercedes-Benz 190/380 Schulz-Cabrio shows just over 16k kilometers and is now offered out of Monaco by the selling party.
The exterior was finished in Classic White (737) but is now Mother of Pearl White with black plastic impact strips tracing the beltline of the car. The engine bay retains its original Classic White color. This W201 was officially converted to a cabriolet by famous in-period coachbuilder and tuning company Schulz Tuning led by Erich Schulz and his nineteen man team. This was their first running and driving prototype that was shown at the Geneva Motor Show and commissioned by 1982 FIA Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg as he was both driver and brand representative for Schulz Tuning. The body underwent extensive modifications by lengthening the front doors, cutting out the B-pillar and moving it rearward, reinforcing the A-pillar with additional steel, reinforcing the windshield structure, and adding 2mm thick sheet steel throughout the floor pans front and rear. Also added are welded steel fender flares making this a widebody A201. Erich Schulz heavily modified a R107 folding soft top by adding his own designed cast aluminum armatures. To aim this car towards his luxury clients, Schulz made the top an electro-pneumatic operation at the press of the retractable sunroof button on the dashboard. A full bodykit from Schulz Tuning is present on the car including front and rear bumpers, a SEC style hood with a OEM SEC grill, custom decklid, and rocker covers. A Schulz hoodbadge has replaced the Silver Star hood ornament. Fog lights along with the glass Euro headlights and amber corner lenses adorn the front end.
This unique example wears painted 15” Ronal Penta wheels with 225/50 Pirelli P-Zero Asimmetrico tires with 2023 date codes, which match the original tires installed on the car. BBS "Rial" basket weave style wheels were originally on the car, but Keke Rosberg preferred the five spoke Penta style wheel which was installed by him. Koni-Schulz suspension was installed in-period paired with shortened springs. The drivetrain was also carried over into this 190E to match the extra power from the V8 engine.
The cabin was originally Blue Fabric (052) which was changed to a Schulz sourced fine white leather interior and features contrasting black carpets to match the original black plastic panels stretching across the dashboard with Zebrano wood around the gear shift lever. Power windows are optioned front and rear flanked by a white phone next to the e-brake handle. Vacuum powered adjustable headlight switchgear is surrounded by the custom white dashboard and kickpanels. Recaro Sport Seats are upholstered in the fine white leather with buckets in the rear. Interior features also include a Blaupunkt head unit, power antenna, and switch gear for the black power soft top. A lockable glovebox comes standard. The trunk was shortened during the build to fit the retractable soft top, but it still fits a fullsized steel spare wheel.
The four-spoke custom leather wrapped ATIWE AMG steering wheel frames analog instrumentation including a Schulz Tuning 300-kph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. A digital outside temperature sensor can be found mounted below. The six-digit odometer shows 16k original kilometers. A pin of Rosberg’s racing helmet is attached to the steering wheel pad.
This 190/380 is powered by a 3.8-liter M116 aluminum V8 engine paired to a 4-speed 722.3 automatic transmission that was tied to the engine during the build. Power output was rated from the factory 204 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. This is a Euro spec 380 engine, so compression reads at 9.4:1 and redlines at 6,600 RPM. Top speed was reported to be 216-kph with the top up and 206-kph with the top down. An annual service was done in preparation for the sale. These conversions would cost on the cheap end of 45,400 marks all the way up to 121,000 marks which is more than likely for Keke’s car shown here. Schulz had done about 50 V8 conversions on the W201 platform before building this car.
This Mercedes-Benz 190/380 Schulz-Cabrio is now offered for sale by the current owner with 1 key, 1 immobilizer, factory literature, a Keke Rosberg helmet, documentation, articles, French registration and customs paperwork tracing the car going to Monaco, soft-top latch keys, spare wheel, and magazine articles. This 190/380 is offered with just over 16k kilometers out of Monaco by the selling party.
This is arguably a cooler 190E than an EVO II in our eyes. Keke Rosberg commissioned this car in-period after winning the Formula 1 World Championship in his Williams FW08. He was the brand ambassador for Schulz Tuning and Keke has a history of being a petrolhead and car collector. Schulz Tuning was famous for starting out by sticking M110 in-line six engines in the brand new and shiny W201 chassis. Mercedes-Benz finally built a compact car that had a chassis tuned for handling and being capable as a sports sedan, which the world found out about in 1984 when the Cosworth 2.3-16 valve came out. But Erich Schulz had that idea when he first got his hands on the new Baby Benz. He made V8 powered W201s and even a few hatchbacks before doing this project. This widebody A201 he made for Keke is actually insane. Steel widened fenders, two doors, a frankenstein soft top, and the absolutely rev happy and glorious M116 engine in its pure, high compression form. There’s so much to be excited about with this example that you just need to look through the gallery and read the magazine articles to see. 1980s coach building was so out of hand that the few surviving examples truly are special and a sight to behold.
