This S123 underwent modifications at AMG Germany per the request of the original owner and received a power increase to 210 horsepower, AMG body kit with the Version 3 AMG front bumper that’s integrated into widebody fenders, AMG Penta wheels, AMG suspension, and an AMG steering wheel. Equipment includes central locking, factory roof rails, adjustable headlights, ABS, a glass tinted moonroof, climate control, and headlight wipers. The exterior is finished in Silver Blue Metallic (930) and features European spec bumpers and headlights. The usual chrome brightwork has been painted black as part of the AMG treatment and includes both bumper and beltline trim, along with roof rails, wiper arms, window bezels, door handles, grill, and mirror caps. This was a period correct modification done by the Affalterbach based outfit. Exterior features include headlight washers, a glass sunroof, heat-insulating glass, and a heated rear window. Original glass is present throughout the entire car. An optioned AMG body kit gives the car a brutish look including a hatch spoiler, rear bumper apron, rocker panel covers, and the very rare AMG front Version 3 bumper, which was built into one piece, integrating the bumper into the widebody front fenders. The front bumper is one piece with no brightwork with headlight sprayer nozzles combined. Photos of the original AMG stampings on the bodykit are provided in the gallery.
The factory Bundt wheels are replaced by rare 16” AMG Penta wheels with Silver Blue Metallic body-match painted spokes with a polished lip which wear 225/60 Sawa Rapidex R2 tires on all four corners. Brake rotors show in great condition along with the like new ATE brake calipers at the front. A new tie-rod assembly, center drag link, steering stabilizer, ball joints, idler arm bushings, and exhaust system are seen in the gallery. The car is also fitted with AMG suspension including both springs and shocks.
The interior is upholstered in Blue Velour (932) with Zebrano wood trim accenting the dashboard and a matching blue dash. Interior amenities include central locking, a lockable glove compartment, a Becker Europa Kurier Cassette headunit, 60/40 split-folding rear seats for through-loading, glass sunroof, and front power windows. A full-size spare is located in the cargo compartment with the factory cover. The original first aid kit and jack are also present. The blue carpeting shows no UV damage or discoloration. A fire extinguisher is mounted below the front driver seat and a cassette magazine is situated under the velour arm rest. A rare glass sunroof was also fitted.
The optioned four-spoke AMG Atiwe KBA steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 220-km/h speedometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. The six-digit odometer reads 175,103 kilometers (~109k miles).
This S123 is powered by an AMG-tuned 2.8-liter DOHC inline-six rated at 210 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. Horsepower is up by +25 and torque sees a +7 ft/lb increase as well. All of the AMG work is done in the head of the car which focuses on horsepower over torque. AMG ups the compression ratio from 8.7:1 to 9:1 by removing head material and areas around the valve openings are milled out in a conical shape. AMG then reshapes the camshafts to make them sharper and pairs that with polished intake and exhaust valves with rounded, reduced seat width and lightened polished rocker arms reducing overall friction with more aerodynamic, drag resistant internal surfaces. Hans Auftrecht and his 15 man team believed the stock M110 had little pulling power in the low RPMs, so the new cam profiles and tuning also gave the car more low end punch along with a lot of top end. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The seller has included underbody photos that are viewable in the photo gallery. The car comes with a fully stamped Mercedes-Benz service booklet along with supporting records. An oil service was performed prior to the auction.
This S123 AMG comes with manufacturer’s literature, service invoices, magazines with M110 W123 AMG articles, two keys, original first aid kit, and the AMG certificate of authenticity for the conversion. The selling dealer is located out of Aalean, Germany and can assist with worldwide shipping.
Other than the 500TE, this is probably the coolest S123 we’ve ever laid eyes on. Well, let’s correct that, actually. This might actually be the coolest S123 we’ve ever seen. First of all, let’s chat about engine work: instead of just brutishly stuffing a bigger powerplant in the front end, Hans Auftrecht surgically went into the head of the M110 (one of our favorite engines) and breathed a bit of motorsports tuning into it forging a 210 horsepower, cammy weapon that added a ton of top end along with some low end punch. A DOHC inline-six that revs to 6,500 RPM with punchier compression is a riot. This makes us want to book a plane ticket to the Fatherland just to rip it on the Autobahn. Second, we need to talk about the front end. The Version 3 AMG bumper is a sight to behold. It’s one of those few times where the longer you stare at the pictures, the more your jaw drops. The 500TE just has a standard front end. Everyone reading this, please go look at the pictures again. It’s one piece and it’s integrated into widebody fenders! That must've cost a fortune to do in the early ‘80s. The blue velour interior is perfect and actually makes the cabin quieter than a MB-Tex or leather trimmed variant. The meaty Pentas are always the right choice for these cars and it has been well maintained its whole life. This car is a masterpiece and is going to astronomically rise in value as all the more well known pre-merger AMGs drag this one’s value up on merit. This is the hipster S123 AMG and we’re here for it.
