This 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190D is a European-market example that was purchased new in Germany by the seller’s Grandfather before being brought to the States where it now shows just 56k miles from new. Finished in Barolo Red (540) over Palomino Cloth (074), power is provided by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Factory equipment includes a power sliding sunroof, a power-adjustable passenger door mirror, an automatic antenna, air-conditioning and an orthopedic backrest for the driver seat. Modifications consist of an aftermarket front grille and a 2.3-16 style rear spoiler. This 190D is now offered for sale on behalf of the original owner's estate by his grandson in Surprise, Arizona with the original owners manual, sheepskin seat covers, the factory tool kit, a clean Carfax report and a clean Wisconsin title in the seller’s name.
The exterior is finished in Barolo Red (540) with contrasting gray side sills, body trim, bumpers and mirror covers. Exterior equipment includes an automatic antenna, heat insulating glass, a heated rear window, an electrically-operated sunroof, a power passenger-side mirror and the original European-spec headlights. Modifications made to the exterior include an aftermarket grille with a three-pointed star along with a 2.3-16 style rear spoiler finished in body color. The seller notes that the original grille is included with the car and can be viewed in the photo gallery. No signs of rust or damage are present on the body and no accidents are shown on the Carfax report.
The 14” wheels wear silver hubcaps and come fitted with BFGoodrich Touring T/A tires measuring 185/70 on all four corners. The seller notes that the tires will need to be replaced along with the front lower control arm bushings. A full-size spare tire is fitted under the trunk floor along with the factory jack and original tool kit.
The cabin is upholstered in Palomino Cloth (074) with matching beige headliner, floor mats and a black dashboard. Zebrano wood trim lines the center console and shows no signs of cracking or fading. Interior appointments include heating and air conditioning, manual windows, a folding center console, a cassette tape holder, central locking and an orthopedic backrest for the driver seat. The seats have been covered with sheepskins since new and photos of the seats with the covers removed are viewable in the gallery. The seller notes that the heat is currently bypassed. The original Blaupunkt Heidelberg cassette player is included along with a set of all-weather floor mats.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames analog instrumentation including a 110-mph speedometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. A digital outside temperature sensor is mounted centrally at the bottom of the cluster. The six-digit odometer currently shows just under 56k miles from new.
This three-pedal Mercedes is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder OM601 diesel engine which produces 71 horsepower and 90 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The seller reports that the car will need a new serpentine belt and that the battery mounted in the car is not the correct size.
The Carfax report shows the first registration report in 2010 in Wisconsin with annual registration reports shows from then on. No accidents or damage reports are shown on the Carfax. This 1984 190D five-speed is now offered for sale by the current owner in Surprise, Arizona with the original manufacturer’s literature, tool kit, Blaupunkt radio, a clean Carfax report and a clean Wisconsin title.
A walk-around and driving video has been provided by the seller below.
While twin-turbo V8’s and 10” touch screens may be attractive, sometimes getting back to basics can provide a more unique and focused experience that modern cars are not capable of. This W201 emphasizes the basics with manual controls for the windows, seats, parking brake and even transmission. The cloth seats and silver hubcaps compliment the red exterior and signify the utilitarianism of the 190D. This example hails from Germany featuring the European spec headlights which provide a more cohesive front-end design. The 2.0-liter OM601 engine was never offered in the US and comes paired with a rarely-seen five-speed manual transmission. Showing exceptional condition with no signs of rust, this W201 will continue to offer an engaging driving experience for many years to come.

Congrats to the lucky new owner. Quite the steal on the price for the low number of owners, the condition and the low mileage. Enjoy.
@wahip I have a 190D 2.5 turbo 5-speed manual (199 black pearl metallic) with a german cloth interior and a 2.3-16v genuine body kit. Paired with 17 inch monoblock wheels. Clean CA title.
Well-bought! The buyer should be very happy with a car that is barely broken in. As for me, I'm still looking for that unicorn Euro-only 190D with the 2.5 turbo 5-speed...

@wahip The AC works great, I did not see anything that looks like a block heater when taking the photos. The mechanic did not mention any leaks when he did the inspection but he did mention some bushings that could be replaced.
Although the heater core has been bypassed, does the A/C still function correctly? Is there any block heater installed for colder climes? Also, there was no mention of oil leaks, which might be expected from a low-mile, stored car that has not been driven regularly and may have some dry seals. Any way to confirm this? Sorry for the string of questions, just wish I was closer to inspect in person...

How long was this car operating in Wisconsin road salt?
the wing is hilarious....the slowest car ready to launch! cool car otherwise
@Hartlaub I'd like to see the rear most part of the rockers, just ahead the rear tires. Specifically, the driver's side. Thank you.
@JZap Unfortunately we are not with the car so we are unable to take more photos, I will try to comb through the originals to see if i can get a better view for you. I am having some trouble getting a clear view of it with the shadows on the photos. What part of the rocker panel specifically are you trying to see?
Beautiful 190! Could you please provide a photo of the drive side rocker panel just in front of the rear wheel? There appears to be some distortion visible at that location in the posted photos, but none close enough to clearly see what it is. Thank you and GLWTA.
@GSinIL We have not found any documents from my grandfather. We do know he bought it new in Germany so the kilometers put on before conversion should be very minimal. We will keep looking for documents so we can give some better answers.
Beautiful car, love the color combo. Question on the miles. The cluster was obviously converted at some point since it is now showing miles. Do you know/have any records of the actual kilometers at the time of conversion and how this relates to the miles shown? Thanks!

"so there has never been a need for heat..." I found that comment entertaining. I live in Phoenix and know that it isn't always 110+ degrees. I don't know of a reason for bypassing cabin heat except for a leaking heater core. It's a super simple test - hook the heater back up.

Anything with 3 pedals and a diesel is sacred in the world of Mercedes. Killer color on this 190 too. Will be watching this one
@Random We are not entirely sure for what reason (if any) the heat was bypassed, what we do know is the mechanic who inspected it mentioned it was a fairly normal procedure to be done to this generation of car. Not sure about any available heat, the car resides in Phoenix so there has never been a need for heat or an opportunity to test it.
Greetings, I have 2 questions: Why was the heater bypassed? Is there any heat not that it has been bypassed? Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply, Hartlaub. I'm interested.
@MikeBar I don't have an exact number on miles put on recently but it was driven around town for about 3 months out of the year. The heater bypass refers to the heater core being bypassed, the mechanic said it was fairly common to see and can be reversed to factory layout fairly easily.
Good looking car. What is meant by "the heater is currently bypassed." Does the heat for the passenger compartment no longer works? If so, is this something that can be corrected? How many miles has the car been driven in the last couple of years?
@Bamboo AC works great!
@roup1 Thank you, We have not found any service records yet
AC works as designed?
