Thanks to all for the great comments and bidding. And congratulations to @DesertRat for a hard fought win. This is a sweet little car.
I was just contacted regarding whether or not the cruise control functions. It works nicely...
@SamSl Thanks for the note. I sold the car the day after the auction ended for $15k. You can find my inventory at mercedesheritage.com. Regards, Roy
Thanks for the comments and bidding. Very close but not quite there for such a rare car. I'm happy to have a discussion with any interested party regarding a sale. MB Market can connect us.
We have a ways to go here. Keep in mind I spent over $7k improving this rare 123 Wagon. All my service invoices will come with the car. I received the plastic fitted dash cover and will include that in the sale. The car is immediately usable and drives beautifully.
The car smogged no problem yesterday so a California resident can buy the car with confidence. Compression readings cold are (1-6): 115/110/120/110/115/120. We also installed the correct driver's side under dash panel - found it in Croatia!
@tcstraker No problem. Tires are dated 45th and 46th week of 2020. One is not dated but identical to the other 3 with regard to type and wear.
Thanks for the note @tcstraker. In fact when the radio is turned off, it swivels 180 degrees and does look like a blank off plate. Clever function to foil would-be radio thieves. Climate control works correctly at the moment with heat and ac. No warning lamps on. Headlights seem to be aimed well. Additionally; clock/passenger outside mirror/fog lights/rear window power switches/various gauges/front courtesy lamp function as well. Hope this helps.
I just purchased a solid fitted dash cover for this car. It will be included with car. Compression readings coming shortly.
Some background on this rare 280TE. According to Nitske's MB Production Models book, 1,329 280TEs were constructed in 1985. And of course, all those cars were European models. MB never imported a gasoline 123 wagon to the US, much less the top-of-the line 280 model. We received the now iconic 300TD models. Great turbocharged TDs bring a premium today. A US 300TD produced 123 HP while the Euro 280TE produced 185 HP, a full 34% increase over the turbodiesels. Nor were there any manual gearbox US models ever offered here. If you parse the possible number of similar cars now sitting in the US, the number is exceedingly low. Particularly accounting for the 5-speed gearbox. I doubt there are more than a handful of 280TE wagons in the US of any configuration. In my 31 years of business, I've seen only 1 other 5-speed TE. It was offered to me on consignment about a year ago with an asking price of $45k. It was far ahead of this Thistle Green car cosmetically but had the same mileage and felt generally the same. Ultimately the owner changed his mind about selling, noting he'd never find another one...
Thanks to all for the comments and bidding. A 98% original paint 106k mile fully documented and well sorted 300SD needs to bring a bit more than the high bid here. We'll keep marketing the car. Keep an eye out for my ultra-rare 1985 280TE Euro wagon coming to MB Market soon.
I should mention that we largely corrected the 2 spots of discoloration in the rear footwells. Looks much better now.
I agree with @Awismot and @thewandering280e Pastel Grey is a very elegant color. I sold a spotless 82 300D in pastel grey/blue mb tex earlier in the year.
Thanks to all for the comments and bidding. Takes a bit more to own this rare 123 diesel. I don't expect to find another one.
@fiatspider I would say yes, anytime an odometer comes out of a car and is modified/changed etc. we would have to consider the mileage to be TMU. And I meant the new MPH odometer with zero mileage on it potentially would have been advanced to register the mileage equivalent to the KM showing on the discarded Euro odometer.
@clonski I tried to run a CarFax when I acquired the car but it was not in the database.
@fiatspider Thanks for the note. Your comments regarding the specification of the car are self-evident to the community. To my knowledge the prevailing practice when converting a 'grey market' car at that time was to advance the mileage on the new MPH speedometer head to reflect the KM on the car at the time of conversion. Contrary to MB Market's comment in the first paragraph, the car was in fact imported in 1984 as per the 'asterisk year' on the CA title of 1984. Comparing the build date of approx 01/84 with its first registration date in CA of 05/14/84 we can conclude the car had negligible use before being sold to my client. That said, you are correct in noting there can be vagarities with mileage on gray market cars. Hope this helps.
@clonski A new radiator was installed subsequent to the comments of high temps (11/06/09 @123,906 miles). Temps today are normal. I will upload images of paint depth readings which will reveal minor paint repairs over the years. As noted in the photo essay, hood, door, front fender, deck lid bolts never disturbed. I don't have compression readings.
Observations on this cool 300D’s gearbox: Intermittent low speed rumble only while idling along in 1st or 2nd gear. And balky 1st – 2nd upshift only after first start of the day with cold gearbox. We’ve chased both with new axles and differential/transmission fluid changes with some improvement. So, some gearbox wear after 161k miles. Will load a driving video tomorrow.
