This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was originally ordered internally at Mercedes-Benz for the German market and has remained in a climate-controlled collection. The roadster is powered by a 2.8-liter M110 I6 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and is finished in Astral Silver Metallic (735) over Black MB-Tex (151). The car has been fitted in period with a full custom widebody and features Rial wheels. Equipment includes a folding soft top, removable paint-matched hardtop, an upgraded Becker head unit, additional aftermarket speakers, and an AMG Atiwe steering wheel. Records included in the sale show a stamped service booklet, inspection paperwork, data card, and order paperwork. The most recent service includes a tune up and oil service in November of 2023. @Amine78 Hello, thanks for your interest! This is water steam and not smoke. Just normal condensation of a cold start. The SL got regularly inspected and also received a new road inspection in Germany, where it checked out without any flaws. It therefore is in very good condition. Best, Grossaspach

@Amine78 I'm not affiliated but that looks like normal condensation build up from the exhaust. Normal and non-invasive. Just turning water to steam.

Hello, last question before bidding why the car smokes white from the exhaust ? Thank you

@edand I'm staring at it thinking the same. Might be ABC but it's definitely period-correct. I keep thinking that a low mileage 280SL is cool enough but this would just be a riot.
What a cool (and unique) body kit!

Whoever made this, it's still a very cool thing.
@thembmarket That's why I keep your site on my favorites list
Thanks to all for the input and information. We've adjusted the listing and are researching where this kit would have originated. We value a community focused on helping buyers and sellers. Thanks to our community as always.
@Abel thanks for commenting. People are lazy and like to label any body kit from the 80s with strakes as a Koenig. 30 seconds of research would tell you this is not one.
@Retrophit indeed… not Koenig at all.
OMG! Not Koenig at all! Nothing correct on this one! My guess is a mix of different things but certainly not Koenig!! I have a real 1/50 certified Koenig r107, i know these since the 80’s. You should change your add as it’s embarrassing. To be honest
@Amine78 Thank you for your question. Due to German road safety regulations, the spoilers have to be detachable to prevent more serious injuries in case of accidents with pedestrians. While I cannot state the exact reason why they were detached at the time of the picture, they generally can be detached if desired. As stated in the description, the fitting has been done by Leinwather & Blazek who ordered the entire kit from Koenig. Best, Grossaspach
Hello quick question why on the first black and white photos there are no spoilers and on the other it is installed? t The spoilers were bought and fitted by Koenig? Thank you
@Retrophit No, the period pictures are to 100% certainty from the 1980s. I'm referring to picture 130 in the gallery. Also check the BMW E12 parking on the left side on that picture. Pic 131 is just another batch of other images taken from the collector who used to photograph his car a lot - no one can blame him for that ;) Here you can also notice that the number plate has been changed in the meantime to a season registration (notice the numbers on the right side of the plate, indicating the months). Also, the location is different... I'll follow your suggestion and reach out to Koenig for more clarity. I want that everyone bids with confidence on this rare example of a R107. Best, Grossaspach
None of the documents mention the word “Koenig” that I saw. Period pictures of the car are at least from the 90s judging by the Audi (?) in the background. You can email Koenig Ana ask them to authenticate it, though I doubt they will. Nevertheless, I would give it a try
@Retrophit Thank you for commenting on the auction and pointing out your concerns. The paperwork from the 1980s actually documents the entire tuning that was done to the car. Also, as you can see from the documents in the gallery, there are pictures included that were in fact taken with the exact same body kit back in the 1980s. You can even see the old German number plate on the car that also matches with the first owner registration. Hope this helps, Grossaspach
Very skeptical. This looks like no other Koenig kit I’ve ever seen on an r107 and the side skirts and fender vents look 2000s not 1980s. We sure about this?

This is a rare one, let's see where this goes. Could be a very fun daily in the states.
Because nothing says 1983 like this. It was a fun decade.
