This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC 5.4 AMG Widebody was built at the Kassel Branch in Germany before it was modified by then-independent tuner AMG Germany. The car spent time in Europe, Japan, and New Zealand, before being imported to the United States in 2023. It was acquired by the current owner via The MB Market in 2022. This Widebody is 1 of 25 examples built by AMG. Finished in desirable Black Pearl Metallic (199) over Grey (278) leather, the body features an authentic Gen 1 AMG widebody kit including fenders, bumpers, skirts, body molding, and spoiler. Power comes from an AMG-modified 5.4L M117 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with LSD (Limited-Slip Differential). Equipment includes fog lights, a sunroof, an Alpine head unit, automatic climate control, power-adjustable heated front seats, and more. Fresh service records accompany the car from 2024 and include new spark plugs, a new air filter, new valve cover gaskets, a new fuel filter, and various general maintenance items. The odometer shows 91k kilometers (~56k miles). This AMG widebody is now offered for sale in Costa Mesa, California with ownership records, service records since 2008, 2 keys, the original tool roll, and a clean Montana title.
The body is finished in Black Pearl Metallic (199) with color-matched lower cladding, bumpers, and painted chrome as part of the AMG treatment. This pillarless coupe also features fog lights, headlight washers, and a sunroof with tilt function. The car features original Euro headlights and full Euro Gen 1 AMG widebody kit. The full widebody conversion consists of stamped AMG lightweight fiberglass widebody fenders, extended side skirts, lower cladding, both bumpers, and a lip spoiler. A metal era-correct AMG and 5.4 badge are affixed to the trunk lid. The seller notes the sunroof opens partially and will require a new cable & clamp A1267801789. The car has had paintwork as a result of a minor accident in early 2012 to the rear of the car. The impact was centered on the number plate area which was pushed in about 100 mm and the rear of the car was professionally repaired. An original Hans Werner Aufrecht AMG security sticker is still affixed to the back window and all glass remains original.
Original 16” AMG Penta wheels measuring 9” wide in the front and 10” wide in the rear are installed with AMG center caps. The wheels are wrapped in Firestone 225/55 tires in the front and Bridgestone 255/50 tires in the rear. Standard equipment included four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and rear self-leveling suspension.
The cabin features Grey (278) leather seating surfaces along with matching carpets, door panels, and original carpet floor mats pictured in the gallery. Amenities include heated power-adjustable front seats, dual-tone horn, automatic climate control, an Alpine head unit, and burl wood trim accenting the dashboard, center console, and doors. The wood veneer shows some cracks and a wood shift knob is installed along with a leather-wrapped AMG steering wheel.
The leather-wrapped AMG steering wheel frames a 300-kph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and a combination gauge for coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and fuel economy. The six-digit odometer shows 91k kilometers (~56k miles). The original AMG gauges feature light grey faces with black dials.
The 5.4 M117 offering from AMG was the largest engine available at the time and predated the later 6.0 version beginning in 1986. The AMG 5.4 engines were offered in various stages of performance depending on your budget, with AMG sale documentation at the time stating 310 bhp, 0–60 in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. This 500SEC AMG features a bored SOHC 5.4-liter MIl7 with performance head work, camshafts, extractors, dual air inlet and tuning putting it on the higher end of the performance 5.4 offerings. An acceleration chart pictured in the gallery shows the car still matches the AMG pre-merger performance figures. Additional photos provided show AMG engravings on the engine block and camshafts. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission with LSD (Limited-Slip Differential). Previous underbody photos show the 2.24 stamped rear end with LSD along with white AMG springs and AMG-labeled Bilstein shocks.
The previous owner had the car verified in 2017 by Diamler AG via the Mercedes-Benz / AMG registry. This AMG widebody is now offered for sale in Costa Mesa, California with ownership records, service records since 2008, 2 keys, the original tool roll, and a clean Montana title.
The MB Market is proud to offer an incredible opportunity to acquire this authentic C126 AMG Widebody for a second time! At the time the car was built, AMG was still an independent tuning company separate from Mercedes-Benz. This particular car was built by AMG Germany during an era when “The only limitation on what could be done to your Mercedes-Benz was the size of your bank account”. Cosmetically, there were endless available modifications from interior bits to exterior body kits and wheels. Additionally, AMG offered a wealth of performance upgrades and at the top of the food chain was the 5.4 M117. While many people have become aware of the provenance of the more common 6.0 versions, not many know that in 1984 and 1985 the premier offering from AMG was actually the 5.4. The 6.0 officially debuted in 1986 which makes any 5.4 car significantly more rare. According to sources who worked with AMG Germany and North America in the 80’s, an estimated 25 cars were built with the 5.4 engine and of those, nearly all of them were DOHC. While the DOHC did offer a few more horses, the trade off was reliability and longevity. From a standpoint of maintenance and reliability, the SOHC versions such as this were easily the winners. In fact, many of the DOHC cars were converted back throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s for this reason. In short, the SOHC 5.4 is the ideal AMG-worked engine of them all with an estimated 25 made in total and this one is the real deal. Only one other example has come to market publicly in recent years so uncovering another will be nearly impossible. Whether you’re looking for a genuine piece of AMG history for your collection or prefer to drive your investments, this C126 5.4 AMG Widebody is sure to give you one hell of a return on investment.

@zachmac This is the same color combination as the very first AMG Hammer we sold here in 2022. I got to drive that one personally and the grey interior was soooo good on it.And so it begins.$165,000 bid placed by @ToutesEtoiles
Gotta agree with an earlier commenter who said prior to seeing this grey wasn't a favorite color interior but here it just works!Phone is charged and popcorn ready. Lets go!Hopefully there are bidders waiting in the weeds. I've got my popcorn ready! Before there was ever a 6.0L, there was this: the 5.4L AMG engine which was the top dog. I think this is arguably better than the later 6.0 versions for two reasons: rarity and reliability. Only 25 known examples were built of the 5.4 making them much harder to find. The 6.0's come with their own set of maintenance items which can prove daunting in the long run. The Gen 1 body with the Penta wheels is such a good look! To whoever might be lurking, I'd love to come check this car out in person if you win!$145,000 bid placed by @Germanscore
looking forward to the ending on this one. A very nice example that with some elbow grease and minor finishes can be made next level! Goodluck to all$140,000 bid placed by @Antiquarian
$130,000 bid placed by @Nurbnerd
This is a very nice car, and is just as nice if not a little better, IMO, than the white Gen I 5.4L SOHC widebody that was Reserve Not Met (RNM) for $325k at the Mecum Kissimmee auction in Florida several days ago. The Mecum car has Recaro seats - a big plus for that car. The 199 Blue Black paint over grey interior for this auction is more attractive that white over grey, IMO. Seller needs to post some cold start and aggressive driving videos.@AMG5pt4 thank you for your input, I will ensure a photo of lifters is uploadedEngine has tubular headers from AMG from the new pics. Unfortunately, the one pic of the valve train doesn't show the other side. Can't verify solid lifters, but would be surprised if they are not solid lifters.@Kirillva you are welcome to view, I will email MBmarket and ask to put us in contactIt’s sad that we can’t manage appointment to look at the car$125,000 bid placed by @Antiquarian
@Kirillva Yes, this can be arranged, I will ask MBmarket to arrange@Wilson1974 , Very nice example, can we arrange the inspection this Friday/ Saturday, coming from San DiegoAn additional 14 photos have been added to the gallery.@LTbenz I've been in the closet camp for this thought train as well. Surely others agree!Holy grail status! Top dog from AMG at the time and arguably better than the later 6.0 version. More reliable, more rare, more cool.$90,000 bid placed by @Nurbnerd
Beautiful car! A true genuine icon. I personally used to overlook grey leather interiors but time has a way of changing taste. Grey interiors have quickly become one of my favourites. Really brings back those authentic late ’80s, early ’90s feels. Reminds me of some fond memories of my grey of Nintendo cartridges, PlayStation 1 plastics, a time when design was quiet, purposeful, and permanent. Colours from a special era, when things aged with you instead of being replaced. Best of luck to the bidders on this$85,000 bid placed by @Creativemind
@AMG5pt4 thank you for your input, I will have arrangements made for the suggested image details@ Seller, the car is in So Cal and I am in Georgia and I have an 85 Affalterbach widebody that I am restoring with the exact same colors (paint/interior) as your offering, so I won't be inspecting the car. My car also has a 5.4L engine, but with the DOHC 32-valve heads. For all visitors to this auction, the manually scrawled "AMG 50.1" on the end of the camshaft is accurate and correct for the early cams that AMG had made. I have seen similar cams from Gen I M117 engines with the same engraving. These are real AMG cams. The "50" stands for 5.0L M117 cams. To get to 5.4l, the 5.0L M117 blocks were bored from 96.5mm to 98.5mm and the stroke increased to 88.9mm for a total displacement of 5,416cc. AMG had Nural supply cast pistons for these engines that were compatible with Alusil blocks. It would be helpful if the Seller would post more pics of the engine - specifically the exhaust headers to prove that they are hand welded tubular headers, and it would be very nice for the auction results if one of the valve covers could be removed (easy) so we can show/prove that the valve train is solid lifters vs stock hydraulic lifters. At the very least, remove the oil filler cap and shine bright light into the cap hole and take a pic - maybe we can see that they are solid lifter valve train.@AMG5pt4 I welcome an inspectionI am pretty sure this WB for sale was originally an Affalterbach car that at some point early in its life was sent to Japan. After some number of years in Japan it was brought to New Zealand where it resided for a number of years. Below is a link to posts about the NZ WB. Reason I believe the above offering is the same car is the 5.4 badge on the boot lid - never have seen an original WB with a 5.4 badge - and the same colors, steering wheel and AMG gauge faces. Henric in Los Angeles had these 5.4 badges recreated based on the pics of the NZ car. I have one. Thought about putting the 5.4 badge on my 5.4L widebody... I seriously considered buying the car when it was put up for sale in 2009 - about $35k, I recall, but didn't pull the trigger as I had just bought my 5.4L 500SEL sedan and no way could have two AMG's. I would strongly recommend a personal inspection of this car. The old pics of this car show the AMG hand made tubular headers for the SOHC engine - the pics provided here do not show much of the engine. I would also recommend looking hard for any rust under the rear window. Maybe the Seller can crawl into the trunk and take a flashlight and cell phone to take pics looking up at the several large round holes in the trunk sheet metal that allow a view of the rear parcel shelf and where the rear glass meets the body of the car. https://www.benzworld.org/threads/500-sec-amg-widebody-1985.1435850/?post_id=3404411#post-3404411@swissBliss the Gen I rear fiberglass flares did not have the same profile as the Gen II steel flares. The Gen I rear flares were not as aggressively wide as the steel flares and also had a slight curve to them - most noticeable along the hip lines. The Gen II flares had a fairly linear shape from the edge of the door jamb to the apex of the flare and then down to the rear tail light opening. The Gen I flares had a less aggressive flare from the door jamb and tail light edges. The Gen II flares may have a larger max flare at the wheel opening vs the Gen I flares. AMG was always tinkering with their body kits as they progressed from early Gen I to late Gen II. The front widebody flares are fairly consistent from Gen I to Gen II. The side skirts are also significantly different from the Gen I to Gen II SEC's that match the above discussed rear flare changes. Same to be said about the rear Sacco panels between the rear door edge to the wheel opening. On my 85 WB, the rear Sacco panels are essentially stock and AMG used expandable foam to push out the Sacco panels to match the profile of the side skirts. The Gen II Sacco panels were made to fit the WB panels - they were not stock MB panels. The aftermarket AMG WB kits never include these key parts (rear Sacco panels) - they don't understand that they are quite different than stock SEC Sacco panels. Body shops are left to use glue or foam to push out the panels.$75,000 bid placed by @premergergold
@StuttgartClassix unfortunately my situation changed and I am no longer going to move to the USA and I was not able to enjoy the car, I have had the car in storage but it’s now become too impractical to continue storing the car so I made peace with the fact I’ll let it go. As I don’t want to bring the car to the far east@seller, why so little driving time. Would have loved to see this at the various CNC with the MB crews out hereI get that, it's just that 1st pic, probably the lighting, made the widebody pan l in rear look 'smooth'. No doubt this is a proper, legit, WB! GLWA@swissbliss not all panels were made the same. various materials etc. Rarely are they all the sameAdditional photos of the muffler and underside have been uploaded to the gallery.@SwissBliss Think its just you :P@Maramski Will upload the photosIs it just me, an optical illusion on the 1st pic, or does it look like the rear widebody quarter panels are less aggressive/pronounced as they normally look on WB (both authentic AMG and tribute builds) cars?Having spent some time in a 5.4 liter car, they are aggressive, fast, on their toes, and brutish. It has ‘80s exotic car aura and performance. Good luck this is a fantastic blue chip Mercedes that’ll appreciate in value.$50,000 bid placed by @Wolftown
