@Armand1508yes, the whole point of the facelift conversion was to make it look like that.
@124guyI agree. In fact, I suspect that all the work (interior, exhaust and facelift) may have been done by a professional tuner as one project. The interior job is certainly not a work of an upholstery shop. It's all very high-quality custom work. It almost looks like it was done at the factory.
All 190 photos are back in the listing.
@Bugsbunnywe have not deleted any photos since this auction started (we unable to do that even if we wanted) but I did notice that most pictures disappeared and just spoke with MB Market and they are fixing it right now. Apparently, it is a glitch that has happened before with another listing. As to any accidents or prior damages, we are not aware of anything, although it is said in the listing that the car had been refinished (to address your comment about paintwork). If this car had been previously damaged, we would have no way of knowing it. The facelift conversions are so common on these that I would not link it to any damages, especially knowing that the interior has been customized as well.
@Panchobecause it was converted to look like E500, which is also mentioned in the car description. BTW, it's not just the front but the rear end as well. Many 500E cars had this done. All you have to do it look at prior MB Market listings. We also have had at least 2 with the same conversion.
There is another video that was into uploded but I hope it will be tomorrow. It covers the interior and engine start. Here is the link until it is properly included in the listing: https://youtu.be/GO2g__IMnYY
@karlkaczmarczykwe purchased the car through a service called Auto1 and on the invoice it is not specified if the car came from a dealer or an individual. The odometer, however, is listed. We will have MB Market upload it tomorrow so that you can view it.
@karlkaczmarczykI agree. It is unknown if the odometer reading is genuine. I can only speak for the condition of the car. Also, there are some countries in Europe where odometer rollbacks are more common. I am not sure if Switherland and Luxemburg (where the car spent its life) belong to that group.
@Cornell89yes, I did import the car but unfortunately most cars from Europe do not come with records. Also, I purchased the car in Luxemburg, so not sure how long it spent in Switzerland.
@Carmelonno, the buyer will not have to pick it up here. The car can be shipped anywhere. If you contact me directly with your zip code, I will be happy to give you shipping quote.
@zachmacI kind of see what you are saying. It must have been the light or the camera settings. It's definitely black interior.
@LWB250now I remeber that about 6 years ago we had a two-door 250 that had original Zenith carbs and it didn't run properly so we tried to have them rebuilt and nobody in town could do it because they said they cound't get parts so we ended up getting the Webers. Maybe that's why these were changed out. At least it seems as the Webers are easier to maintain and adjust.
@LWB250it's definitely interesting to hear about the carbs. Do you know if the Webers make it run any better? More power or better fuel economy?
@LWB250that's not a problem. I'd be happy to take additional photos and send them for upload.
@LWB250 I found many places online where people refer to the Webers as "upgraded" carbs on these. I, personally am not familar very much with these cars but there had to be a reason for the prior owner to replace them with Webers rather than rebuilding the original Zenith
As a seller, I would like to supplement the MB Market description with everything I know about this car. I hope this helps potential bidders. First of all, I’d like to point out that this is the very first car of this type that I’ve had. Because of it, I don’t know much about them and my knowledge only comes from what the prior owner told me as well and what I can see on the car as well as from what I’ve done to it. The previous owner sold it to us earlier this year when he decided to retire abroad and not wanted to take the car with him. According to him, the restoration of this car was done about 5 years ago and included a complete repaint as well as cosmetic body repairs. He said, no heavy rust had to be addressed during the process. All floor board had been rust protected and additional coat was applied during the last restoration as well. I’d say his statement is consistent with the condition of the paint that does not look fresh and it already has some signs of wear and tear. The condition of the finish is good but there are some flaws (see photos and videos). The mechanical portion of the work was done 2 years ago. That included replacing of suspension components as well as the fuel tank and many other parts under the hood. Most of the work was done by the owner himself so there are not many receipts from the last years but there are many printouts showing research and parts he purchased. Upon visual inspection, it is evident that most of the parts underneath the car as well as may parts under the hood are new or newer. The AC conversion that was done many years ago, also was updated with new parts more recently based on receipts that we found. The tires are also from 2021. The car was almost not driven at all in the last 2 years and that was because the Weber carburetors that were installed over 10 years earlier needed rebuilding and that’s one thing the owner didn’t complete. We got both of them rebuilt at National Carburetors, here in Jacksonville. We installed and tuned them using instructions found online, and in my opinion the car runs well, but not being an expert I think further fine tuning may potentially improve their operation. The owner gave us a very thick folder that includes several years of service records, various diagrams, parts receipts, etc. The folder also includes several hand written notes (almost like a diary) that document service events and other comments about the car. They are older and perhaps not very relevant now, but they show how much this car was loved and cared for by some of the prior owners. Please, feel free to contact me directly and I will be happy to answer all and any questions you may have. Please, don’t wait until the last minute as I may not be in front of the computer when this auction is ending. I will repost this comment toward the end of the auction in case it gest kicked to the next page.
@star4caractually, I think the rear tag lights were deleted during the restoration because they came with the car. There is more information that I am going to share on what I know about this car and it all will be in a comprehensive comment that I will place later in the auction.
@TheDanMan I agree with you. This car also fundamentally (engine, transmission, suspension) feels good and solid and I think it would make a long journey without issues, but you have to keep the risks in mind before such trip.
@ArmyGuy63I don't see a reason why the car would not make it to Arizona, but in my opinion, it is always somewhat risky to drive an older car that you don't know across country. I have seen much newer cars with much lesser miles break down.
Since the listing is ending soon, I just wanted to say a few things about the car because the MB Market description doesn’t do the justice. Despite the higher miles, the car is actually very presentable and very clean. The body looks all straight and the paint is nice. Even the passenger side where it was damaged, looks like the repairs were done to high standards. BTW, the right doors don’t appear to have been replaced; they were just repaired so the damage could not have been too extensive. The interior is virtually with no flaws with the exception of some wood grain fading and minor cracking. The headliner looks to have been replaced at some point. Mechanically, it is solid and runs strong. It would probably drive nicer with proper wheel size but at least the tires are almost new all around and they won’t need replacement for some time. Front brakes look to have been just replaced including OEM rotors. Overall, based on the cosmetics and how it runs, I would assume the prior owner took good care of it and kept it serviced.
@Cornell89yes, the buyer will get 30-day tag. Unfortunately, we didn't dig in into the SRS issue, althought I think we had it scanned at some point and it came out to be driver's side sensor open circuit or short to ground, not 100% sure.
@Obie1luvyou may be correct. If I remember correctly it's been a Florida car and it's common for upper wood grain pieces to be lighter because they are exposed to sun more and have tendency to fading. I remember having a Lexus with the same pattern. No, I don't have the original monoblocks.
@BradH I actually purchased the car from Belgium but from what I understand, based on the registration document, it was first registered there in 2021 so I am assuming it had been in France before that. Without odometer working it is hard to say how many miles I drove it, but perhaps less than 100. Becasue of my driving routine (taking kids to school, etc) it would be difficult for me to drive it on daily basis.

@Jthomassonthere is no exhaust leak. It is an older diesel so it sounds a little louder, but I can assure you it is normal. I will not be able to take a drive video before the listing ends. If you had requested it earlier, I would have been no problem. The car drives fine and doesn't appear to have any issues.
@Jthomassonthe entire movement of the front driver's seat is pretty significant and about 7". When I moved it all the way forward, I had hard time getting out of the car; that's how close the seat was to the steering wheel, and I am not very tall by any means (about 5'9"). I don't think you will even need to move it all the way to the front to be able to reach the pedals. Also, I do not see seatbelts for the rear.
@jlungLOL. yeah, they are not rocket ships for sure but cool to drive regardless
@jlungno they don't which is mentioned in the description.
@38zfxThat is correct
@MBstylethere are no convertions necessary in the US for cars that are 25 years old or older. You can bring it back to Europe, no problem
@MGSLCYes it does have traction control.
@returnofthemarkI can't really think of anything that is related to drivability but there are 2 small issues that are not in the description. First, the passenger headlamp wiper does not work properly. It will move sometimes but it gets stuck. The other issue is that if you slam the driver's door, the glass will not go up and there is a small gap at the top but it works fine if you close the door slowly and let the soft close mechanism pull it. Therefore, if you close the door slowly you never have the problem.
@vmparker2I am sure it can be registered in CA (we have sold several gray market cars to CA), but I also know the process is different and more complex than in the rest of the states. I also believe it varies by counties. I strongly suggest that you contact your local authorities before bidding. Also, many CA residents use different states to register their gray market cars. I hope this helps.
@BlueridgeMBHey, I don’t recall a reason for not tending to the sunroof but I’m thinking it was just an oversight. From what I can see it should be a relatively simple job. I did not open up the cars to see what’s inside but she does sound very nice. The car drives great so I’m not sure that any components need replaced at this time. Tires are the ones that were installed when it was imported. Thank you!
@JAB12sure, I will do that.
@E55_SourceThe only paint work we did was the bottom of the trunk lid. There was a previous repair around the latch that was poorly done and small area where the paint was cracking but there was definitely no rust present. Also, no clear coat was peeling in this area, but whoever fixed it previously used wrong paint code. That's why it was corrected by us. Whatever else was painted on this car, had been done by the previous owner. You are correct about the filler on the passenger quarter panel but the only way you can tell is with a paint meter. The rest of the paint imperfections that I described to you before are still present and visible in the video provided. These are limited to a small spot repair on the passenger front fender (behind the wheel) and some small areas of peeling clear coat on the driver's side.
@gsxrsure I can take some more photos of the LPG. Also, there should be a video of the car on a lift, which I thought is better than photos.
@KingKittyI agree with you 100% but if you read my comment, I didn't say anything about values. Of course, not original car with unknown mileage is worth less than all original one. Despite the discrepancies, I think the car looks great and lots of effort was spent to make it look like this. That's all I was trying to say. As far as the mechanicals, if I were buying this car to drive it, I personally would prefer it with with 160k km rather than 16k (unless I owned a museum) and if you know old cars, you probably know what I mean.
One thing is for sure. Regardless of the extend of the restoration and the fact that the odometer cluster may have been replaced, this car looks amazing and whoever carried out the restoration did an outstanding job. It looks as all suspension components were either replaced or restored, even nuts and bolts were galvanized. Under the hood, all tanks are new among other plastic parts. The car shows great attention to details, which is a good sign that the entire restoration was done properly. As far as the odometer reading, most likely it is not correct but these odometer mechanisms fail so often, it’s probably hard to find one that shows true reading anyways.
@KingKitty it looks like a fully restored car for sure. Lots of new underbody parts but also under the hood (reservoirs, etc)
@elie7elie I do believe the AC was converted but unfortunately I will not be able to verify it because I have left the office and am not with the car. AC systems in general were not as effective on older cars as they are today but this one, from what I remember felt pretty good
With a day left till the end of this auction, I would like to say a few words about this car. Having imported several cars from Europe, including a few W124, I must say this is perhaps one of the nicest and most original ones we’ve had. We purchased this Mercedes from a Benz mechanic/enthusiast who usually buys these cars from private owners, and resells them after correcting whatever the car may need. This car had been garage stored and not driven much in the last 3 years. As a result, some rubber parts such as driveshaft flex discs and the support bearing had to be replaced due to dry rotting. All tires, although with deep tread, also have some dry rotting and need replacement. We purposely left them on the car thinking the new owner can buy a set of his choice rather than have the car with cheaper brand tires that we would most likely install. One of the unique things about this one is that we rarely see one of these cars where everything works as designed, especially the pneumatic system powering the door locks and lumbar support for the seats. We also didn’t even have to charge the A/C system, which is rare. It was cold from the time we got it. Some of you who know these cars, know that this is not a speed demon. It has, however, adequate power and acceleration for comfortable around town driving with great MPG. Please, view all photos and videos and email me with any inquiries. Good luck.
@elie7elieit's really not a huge issue. Apparently many Mercedes, cars from early 90s had engine harness issues (although we have never seen one that would) so some people will always ask about it. I agree an updated harness is a plus on one of these cars but I am also sure there are thousands of these cars with original harness and without any problems. In addition, from what I understand, the harness issues are more apparent on the cars with V8 engines.
@k_bradyNo I don't. We have no records of that. On a side note, it's always good to read previous comments ;-)
Here is the on lift video https://youtu.be/l6ejgfRsKPc
@CarCrazy24the car does not have 3rd row seating. AC and heat both work fine as well as all power options including door locks and even pneumatic lumbar support for the driver's seat. As far as CA registration, this is something you may want to research yourself. From what I understand, the car can be registered in CA, but the process is more involving and costly than in other states. I have the undercarriege video. Let me see if MB Market can post it.
@Jtwoods4I am not sure why you would automatically assume that. First of all, the harness may have been done. We just don't have any records of it. Second, even if it was never done, it doesn't mean it needs it.
@Jtwoods4I have no records for the harness replacement and yes, the hatch stays up by itself
@Stuttgart_Steelyes it was converted. Photo#124 shows a label showing it was done.
@trusnowboarder7yes, ac works and blows cold. There are no dripping leaks from the engine but of course there is a little moisture visible. Not sure if the video helps, but just like in most older cars, you will see some residual fluid deposits. The car definitely has some previous paint work but no obvious or visible body work that I could find.
@drcooledgeI was not aware these had the wiring harness issue. I always thought the V8 engines were the only ones affected. To answer your question, I don't know if the harness was replaced. We certainly didn't replace it. I can only tell you that there don't seem to be any issues with the way the car runs.
@Aflaksno, the control arm is fine but there is a plastic protection cover that has a tear in it. Watch the video, because I think it shows it better. Had I known people would get confused, I would have cut it off with the rasor. It's just a piece of plastic
The reserve is met
@JWCTthere are no tears in the seats at all from what I remember. Unfortunately, I have left the office for today and am not with the car. I apologize.
@ccutler05thank you. I don't believe there is, but there is definitely some prior paint work on the car as indicated in the description.
@Benjamin there is no rust or bubbling in the paint. Also, please refer to the photos and videos since they are pretty detailed.
@RobPerilloLOL. I appreciate it and I don't blame you. I love what I do. The other auction was very interesting and exciting to watch, even for me.
@danvitmonit may actually pass smog but even if it does, there is more red tape in CA. Someone has told me at some point that the state requires some kind of a sticker that they will issue for your gray market car but it costs additional money. The service book has several maintenance stamps and we also have documents showing annual inspections.
@danvitmonthank you. So even though we have sold several cars to clients in CA, I believe the registration process of gray market cars in your state is a bit more complicated than anywhere else. Normally, FL title is good enought to register and title a car anywhere in the US without any issues, but CA has additional requirements that you propabaly want to verify with your local authorities. I know you can get it registered, but you should check what is involved. I also understand that some CA residents use out-of-state addresses to register their gray market cars.
@cascadiayes, there are actually 2 keys for the locks. No mats though.
@gboutonyes it does. It also has been converted to R134
no worries. It should be posted any minute now. Thanks
Also, I do not have the white shocks but with current setup it is still firmer at corners than W124 E500 I also have. I am assuming the original shocks may have worn out and were replaced with new Bilstein. They look new so it was done not long ago.
@driveanythingpa the photo of the AMG label is being sent to MB Market and will be uploaded shortly. What you see on the paint is not car wash scratches. This clear coat damage is very common with early 90's metallic paints on Mercedes and BMW and has nothing to do with car washes. It's due to sun and other elements that basically wear the clear coat. I think these were early water-based, environmental friendly finishes and they were not very durable. The good thing is that the original paint underneath in untouched and those parts of the car can be re-cleared rather than completely repainted. The majority of roof is actually fine. It's only on the outside of roof moldings, trunk lid and vertical panels of passenger side.
@J_Lloydthe car has lots of power and great torque. I have driven an E55 but it was a long time ago and it would be hard for me to do head to head comparison right now. The Internet says both cars have almost equal performance until you go over 200kph. Here is a link I found: https://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/ebss1vg7duvg
@Harrdwarethe last owner had the car for roughly 7 years and according to him, he had bought it without the 3rd seat cushion and that's how we got it. When it comes to service records, we do not have any. I can only say that the car was looked over when it arrived and with the exception of minor issues noted in the description, there are no other known problems, neither with the head gasket, nor the wiring loom. It looks like a daily driven and well serviced car that is ready for use.
@saab_wpgif that's the case than modifications may be needed in order to legally import and register it in the US.
If the car was built for Canadian market, chances are it can be brought to the US without modifications and the process would be super easy. If it had been imported to Canada from another country, then it has to be 25 years old to be exempt from DOT and EPA in the US. Otherwise, modifications may be needed. As far as importation process, it is very easy, although it's always better to hire a broker. They are inexpensive and they make sure all paperwork is in order.
I'm thinking there may be a limit on a number of videos I can post so here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFZFMEyaWQ4&t=99s
Another video showing the undercarriage of the car was sent to MB Market for upload. I am sure it will be available for viewing soon.
@Baileystuffyou are correct. It was at some point converted to r134 by a previous owner in Europe.
@bbmb no problem. I may just shoot a video. It will probably be easier for everyone to see everything
@Jim_Rosenthalno, I didn't try diagnosing it.
@Jim_Rosenthal yes, it does and it works but has a small leak and needs recharging periodically.
@MSerpeno, I have not taken any underside photos but will be happy to do it on Monday. Meanwhile, I can assure there is no rust underneath but the photos will be done nevertheless.
We just sent 2 more videos to MB Market for upload. One shows the engine running and another one is a driving video. We welcome all questions.
Undercarriege video link is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu6awZi0ebs
Correction: new brake pads and rotors were only installed in the front. We purchased parts for front and rear but the rear brakes turned out to be in good enough shape and didn't have to be addressed.
@dean_Laumbach I will try to get it on a lift again for some more photos
@Jim_Rosenthalthe box in the trunk with wires connected to it is some kind of an antenna. The label says KATHREIN Typ nr. 726-185. Not sure what it is for and I didn't find much after I googled it either.
For all of you that want to ship this car outside of the US, as a trusted partner of MB Market, we can arrange the shipping for you. The car would be shipped from Jacksonville, Brunswick or Savannah to the port of your choice. We will also take care of inland shipping to the port, title reasignment and shipping insurance as well as indoor storage of the car until it is picked up and taken to the port. You may direct any inquiries to [email protected]
@Scorpi007there are not many federal documents since the car is EPA and DOT exempt, but yes, we have all documents in order.
@Scorpi007yes, the car can be registered in CA. I know it because I sold several Japan-imported cars to CA in the past. You should, however, check with your local authorities for the proper procedure because from what I understand, even though the car can be registered in your state, the process is more complex and involving than anywhere else in the US.
@kima in the US Carfax only lists odometer reading in miles. The vehicle title, however, has it listed in kilometers. This is always the case with cars imported from countries using metric system.

Maybe that's why these were changed out. At least it seems as the Webers are easier to maintain and adjust.

The other issue is that if you slam the driver's door, the glass will not go up and there is a small gap at the top but it works fine if you close the door slowly and let the soft close mechanism pull it. Therefore, if you close the door slowly you never have the problem.
