New odometer gears have been installed. The seller states it broke when they pressed the reset on the way home from work and they logged approximately 15 miles without it turning.
This W124 is powered by a 4.2-liter M119 quad-cam V8 which is factory rated for 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through four-speed automatic transmission. Factory cosmoline is visible throughout the engine bay and there’s zero corrosion. Rare original air intake boots are included. Recent maintenance includes:
A comprehensive photoshoot of the underside shows the car was Southern kept and has zero rust or corrosion. All QC marks are visible on the bolts and all hardware retains its original plating from the factory. Suspension and rubber boots appear in good standing. Flex disks show no cracking, floor pans have no damage, new shifter bushings have been installed, and there are no signs of modifications. The original engine belly pan is attached and has no damage.
The Carfax report shows two owners (title transfer via family members) with registration reported in Columbus, Georgia from new. Linear mileage updates are shown from new with no accidents or damage reports present on the Carfax. The seller states the car did not see much mileage over the past ten years but has been gone through to make it roadworthy and refreshed using factory recommended services. This 1994 E420 is now offered for sale in Marietta, Georgia with the original manufacturer’s literature, original paint, tool kit, recent service invoices, new wiring harnesses, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title.
The seller has included the following videos.
With the recent inflation of 500E/E500 prices, enthusiasts have been turning to the more affordable younger brother: the 400E/E420 as means to have 80% of the experience for half of the price. There’s still one issue with getting into one of these M119 powered W124s and that’s the rarity of finding well kept examples. With only 4,800 E420s produced in 1994, low mileage clean examples hardly ever surface as these were $6,000 cars ten years ago while the E500 has always retained its collector value making them more commonplace now. In conclusion, not many E420s have survived. This one family-owned, garage kept, very original, rare Malachite Green Metallic on tan 1994 E420 is probably one of only a handful in existence in the US, much less in this kind of collector condition. The face-lift E420s got a new hood/grill design with full glass headlights, cleaner lower cladding getting rid of the black plastic impact strips of the 400E, and an updated 2.24 rear end that helped with highway cruising. These are deeply satisfying and fun cars to operate as the W124 is arguably the best car Mercedes-Benz ever produced with the motorsports derived, hand-assembled M119 being the cherry on top of this collector example that has seen a lot of recent services (including new wiring harnesses) to get this example dialed in for the next owner.

Amazing. this w124 e420 is a special car. a baby w124 e500. also, low quantities produced and future w124 classic!
One thing to remember is I’m not Dean nor have the long standing reputation of him. Yet! You have to start somewhere and I’m hoping my cars will command a premium like his in a few years. Factory services and thorough maintenance is my brand. People will appreciate that soon enough. Thanks for the comments. Obviously wish I went for more, but I’m happy it’s going to a good home. That’s the most important part and more importantly, I know I got the car as good as I could while retaining originality. I’m confident to put my name and stamp of approval on this one!
@ilpatino, I 100% agree with you. I don't even think robbing Fort Knox is enough to describe what highway robbery the sale price for this great car is. There was a W124 in this same exact color combination with 30,000 miles on it that sold at another auction site for $67,777. I have a 1 owner low mileage W201 in a different rare color combination and in a similar condition that I wouldn't sell for what the car in this auction sold for. Many congrats to the incredibly lucky new owner. You should play the lottery.
I must say, I am truly shocked. This doesn't even qualify as stealing anymore. I'll keep the profanity to myself, but my lord, I'm absolutely flabergasted. This can't be..... @stuttgart_steel; hats off to you for letting this go for this amount. The buyer will be over the moon, and congratulations for his buy! I'm going to weep in a corner now. but anyhow, maybe my wife will make it up to me somehow :-)
@ilpatino Try! Let's see if the blocks it -- I'm curious lol
Can I swear here?
@Bergness98 Congrats! I'm psyched for you. I'll give you a shout here in a minute. Can't wait to chat.
@ilpatino Yes, reserve has been lifted! Car is selling today.
@Stuttgart_Steel; no reserve then?
Is that a K.O. bid? It will be a long while before another like this hits the market. Can't wait to chat with the winner -- whoever that may be!
@124guy; If i don't keep my promise, I don't know if i'll make it untill this weekend.
There we go!
Still one helluva car at $25K ;)
popcorn out
$25,000 bid placed by @Bergness98
@ilpatino It's one helluva car at $19k that's for sure.
@ilpatino You only live once 😂
It's 10 o'clock in the evening here in Belgium. My wife just went to bed, and I promised I would not place a bid. At the current price, it is VERY difficult for me to keep my promise.
@ilpatino Don’t worry, once the promised tariffs kick in our economy won’t be so hot and your Euro exchange rate will be very advantageous lol.
@ilpatino The car was dealer serviced up until January of this year. It’s nice seeing MB parts on it. I tried to use OEM and OE parts as much as I could to where it made sense. The car deserved it. Even used wires from a wiring harness from a M278 to rebuild the harness!
See picture 51; even the mono-wiper has the correct part-number on it; 124-202. I am at a big disadvantage, here in Belgium, I have to add about 5000eur to the final price to get it shipped here, and with Trump winning the election, and everybody thinking all economic woes are now gone, the exchange EUR/USD isn't doing me any favours either. Ah well, it's just money, while a very good W124 is priceless!! Good luck, to all involved!
Wow. As a proud 1999 S500 owner that I daily, I can fully attest to the time and capital that is required to get these sorted. Big shout out to the seller for the effort put into this. If I had the space would be all over it. Congrats to the new owner, whoever that is.
Thanks @dean_Laumbach for the comment. Means a lot.

For the record... I do not know the seller or met him in person. Some may ask why I took the time to comment on this particular auction? I have high regards for sellers who take the time, money, and work involved in bringing a car like this to market standing tall. There is a lot of newbie collector car dealers and "flippers" who are making very good money finding clean low mileage cars and flipping them back onto the market with the benefit of a quick detail as their reconditioning process. Its refreshing to see a seller take the time to bring a car to market standing tall as this car deserved that degree of attention. I love the late model W124 V8 E420, and this is an exceptional example in a spectacular color combination and condition. Best of luck to both the seller and the bidders !!! Dean

Final hours of the auction! I'm working today, but I'll try and answer any last minute questions in a timely manner. -Original paint -New wiring harnesses -Immaculate underside and no rust -New fuel and ignition system -Original condition -Rare color combo -M119!!!
The seller is a very well known member of the MB community here in Atlanta. Bid with confidence!
We're less than 24 hours away from the ending of this auction. I really appreciate the comments and it's awesome to see how the users of The MB Market are receiving this car. It gives me hope in the future of Mercedes-Benz collectors and enthusiasts. This thing is so special and nice and I'm so happy to have it here.
One of the most thorough and informative listings I've seen on any car, on any auction site, ever. Also pretty sure in any of my own curious research, I've never seen such detailed photos of a wiring harness rebuild. Very cool to see. Best of luck to the seller and kudos to your prep work. This is exactly how every special car auction should be.

Absolutely gorgeous!
Very nice example and great photos showcasing the time and effort put into this machine
Just checking in on everyone. Let me know if interested parties need additional info or photos or want a phone call. Car is tucked away in my home garage safe and sound. Thanks for the love so far.

@dean_Laumbach Glad to see we share the same opinion. Making everything “perfect” on an already nice example will 100% make them look off. There is such a thing as over doing it which negatively impacts the car.
@Stuttgart_Steel Excellent choice on not touching the wood. That minor hairline crack takes nothing away from the beauty and originality of this vehicle. In the antiques and collectibles world that minor imperfection would be described as beautiful patina. Leather is the same, as I like seeing minor wear on wrinkles on original leather as opposed to new. Many sellers make the mistake of refinishing one piece of wood and when it is installed it looks ridiculous compared to the original wood. The tone, color, and clearcoat gloss will be different. The wood in this car looks magnificent. When it comes to any type of wood or leather replacement I always say its an all or nothing process.
Also wanted to let you all know this was also my car which my brother and I did a full mechanical refurbishment on in similar detail. This was before I knew how to use a camera and let @gasmotorcars take care of the auction for me. https://thembmarket.com/1972-mercedes-benz-280se-4-5 I feel it's a good reference point for my work. Thanks for all the love and interaction so far!
@rattytubes If you’re lucky you can find a nice unit on eBay. But this has zero UV damage or discoloration, so I wanted to leave it original. There’s a company in California that redoes the wood too - can’t remember the name, but I’d be afraid of it not matching it the rest. I’ve seen that before in cars I’ve interacted with. The cabin just loses homogeneity. The car is so nice and original that I didn’t feel the need to mess with it. It tells the car’s story and legitimizes it, in my option. I’m just a big softie for originality I guess!
What a beautiful example! Nothing to nitpick really, but I am curious to pick the brains of the cognoscenti here, regarding how easy/difficult it would be to remedy the minor crack in the center console veneer?
$15,000 bid placed by @Bad_Idea_Dante
@zachmac It regulates temperature throughout all ranges. Monovalve operates as intended. It was hot outside since I’m in Atlanta, that’s why it was on full cold. I didn’t feel like sweating. I also was running it on the low fan setting. I didn’t have it on AUTO which would have had it running at full chat.
$12,500 bid placed by @theinquisitiveone
@Stuttgart_Steel First, amazing job on the posting, videos, pictures, etc. But I did want to ask about the Climate Control. It appears in the video that you had it set to the coldest setting throughout the drive. This means it is on a detent that causes the system to operate basically full cooing all the time. Does the system work correctly when set to a mid position or warmer temp? Fan regulates, dampers all work, temp adjusts, etc. Sometimes having to have it in the full cod position mean the monovalve is not pulsing / regulating correctly?
$12,000 bid placed by @JMR1
@Stuttgart_Steel I had to replace the ODO gears on my 560 SEC. Good times. I replaced the temp display as well. It took some time, but I finally found one on eBay in Eastern Europe. GLWTA!
@TBrad I poked the reset at a red light since I hadn’t pressed it before to test it. I’m happy it broke on me and not whoever wins the car. All of these gears turn to oily stale Oreos over time which is why I stock them at home. Lesson learned is to not ignore known weak spots, but to vigorously test them! It’s now one less thing to break in the future. Thanks for the comment and the positive support!
Important lesson here. Never, ever, press the odometer reset while the car is in motion. As to the write-up; "inoperational"? I believe the term you are looking for is inoperative. Okay, nit-picking aside, this is a beautiful automobile, with the owner going to great lengths to prepare and present at auction. I absolutely love the color combination. If I were looking for a 124 sedan, this would definitely fill the bill, however, I'm a ragtop guy, so show me a cabriolet in this color, and in this good a shape, and I'm there. I was just looking through the pictures again, and those god-awful biodegradable wiring harness were the worst. It's amazing more of these cars didn't burn to the ground.
@stuttgart_steel; well, Mercedes are also cars. In that sense, there is no magic involved. I'm an amateur-restorer. I like to do stuff myself, but nevertheless, I still have ploughed well over 30.000eur into my SL, to get it where I want it to be to drive it. Not where I want it to be to sell it. And even after all that, some things will still need to be adressed, like the head-lamp-wipers. I'm looking at well over 4.000eur to get them operational again.... Once it is finished, I intend to keep it, and enjoy it, because chances are, I will lever lay eyes on one again. Maybe you know, but of the 237.287 r107 SL's ever produced, 49.347 were 560SL's, produced exclusively for the US, Canada, Australia and Japan markets. The Canada-variants had a kilometers layout, but impact-bumpers and sealed-beam headlights, the Australia-variants were of full-Europan livery, but were right-hand drive, and only 701 examples were produced for the Japan market, with full-European livery, and were left-hand drive (although, in Japan they drive on the wrong side of the road, it was truly a status-symbol to be ABLE to get one in left-hand drive.) So no conversion. "ab-werk" as they say in Germany. Aaand, I recently learned that there may be a different cam-profile and EZL involved as well, which should amount to north of 238HP, and 300 pound/feet of torque as in the Australian version. (less restricted on emissions) To say that it rarer then hens teeth is an understatement. But enough of this, I am here for the E420 ;-)
@ilpatino They're a labor of love, that's for sure. No one really knows how to maintain these throughout their lifespan, so it's hard to find good ones. Even good ones need work! But SO worth it. These are great cars -- excited to see your Japanese car.
WOW - I am in Marietta as well and would love to come see this. About 8 years ago, I purchased the exact same car (first owner) but was a 1993 and grey exterior from the first owner, but sold it soon as we were expecting our first child. Good cars, but from my experience
$10,000 bid placed by @dean_Laumbach
@dean_laumbach; I agree. I am in the process of bringing up to spec a very special, and very, very rare 560sl "japan." Only 701 examples were made. I'm sure you know of their existance. It costs a lot of time and a lot of money to get old benzes where they should be, and the work is never really finished. It is easy to lose patience, and run out of money! That being said, this is a very nice specimen, and the seller has set himself a very worthy target, to try to emulate your work. I'll be here for the duration ;-)
$5,000 bid placed by @JMR1
I can't promise anything @ilpatino LOL !!! I see so many sellers out there buying nice but "farm fresh" cars with needs and doing the old "turn and burn" with a quick detail and maybe an oil change. It is refreshing to see a car being brought to market properly sorted and detailed so that the new owner receives a turn key vehicle as advertised. This is an extremely rare event these days. The temptation is very strong. A lot of value present here.
Hey everyone! Welcome to the auction of this lovely and rare W124. I've put my heart and soul into this listing and car and did about 8 months of mechanical recon and driving it around to get it super dialed in for the next owner. This is a one family owned middle Georgia car with original milage and original paint. I added most of my photos I took of the cleaning, mechanical work, and wiring harness rebuilds in the gallery. Please feel free to watch the lengthy video I posted as well. I'm sure whoever buys this car will be doing so sight unseen, so I wanted to cover all my bases and make everyone feel confident in the product they're buying. The car had been sitting for about 10 years previous to me getting my hands on it. A reputable MB shop went through the fuel system in January and then I took care of the rest. I like restoring these cars in my free time and have all of the factory service manuals, so I follow the repair guides to factory spec and have some classical training on these from several old heads with 50+ years of experience each working on Mercedes-Benz. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm available for Facetime, phone calls, texting, whichever you prefer. This is a collector grade E420 and I hope I presented it as such. I also did a full paint correction with CARPRO CQUARTZ ceramic coat in preparation for the sale since these clear coats are fragile at this stage of life. Thanks for looking! I'll be here in the comments interacting with everyone. Thanks for the positive comment @dean_Laumbach your listings and cars are my goal post.
Hi Mr. Laumbach. Congratulations on a very well sold E320 on BAT ;-) Can I have this one, please?
$2,000 bid placed by @Andrew930
If the good lord gave me only one talent, it would be the ability to spot a nice and well prepared vehicle from a country mile. This is very nice car boys and girls. The preparation items that have been addressed is refreshing to see and my hat goes off to the seller. You had me at the rubber trunk stops were replaced. Such a minute pet peeve item, but it shows the attention to detail of this seller. I have this one in my crosshairs. Very nice example of the muscular younger brother of the 500E/E500 W124.
