Thanks for taking my call today, just to recap, looks like we'll need a set of front 4 Matic axles, or ideally re-build these since Mercedes axles are NLA last I checked. Plus a set of tires since these are cracking/dry rotted...and it does appear the listing states a date code of 2012! Appreciate you getting back to me on the paint meter readings quickly as you did. Curious, we spoke of the rust around the rear window, but also looking harder I see what looks to be a repair in the rear bumper on the passenger side, just to the right of the rear hatch? Any chance of an Up Close photo showing what's going on there and perhaps your best guess as to all that's showing? The dog leg in front of the drivers rear wheel, I see a detail shot, but can you perhaps describe what's going on there? Looks like there is similar happenings on the passenger side, albeit to a much lesser extent. Have the AC schrader valve caps been found? They are actually part of what's required to keep refrigerant in the system. The schrader is not the final solution when it comes to it all. Any notes on when the AC was serviced? How much refrigerant was recovered, how much added? A few shots with the flash/pushing focus onto the compressor would be great, would be good to see that it's dry of any oil indicative of a leak, especially behind the clutch/pulley. Thanks again! Will watch this space:)
I run one of these on my S600, just a Little extra growl when you're getting into it. Perfect balance:)
These cars are So.Much.Fun. big nasty v8, capable chassis, just enough creature comforts. Cars like this will be missed as the years march on. Glwta!
Just a For what it's worth, but I still consider head bolt failure to be more the exception vs the rule. I still see 2007's rolling on original bolts with over 150K on the dial. My hypothesis was that one facility in the production of these bolts was turning out some sub par bits and they are Mixed in utterly w/o rhyme of reason. I'd also add that when you do bolts before they have an issue, it's really not a bad job. Lets you tackle the cam phaser plates, install some black series/M159 DLC coated tappers, a catch can (EVERY m156 should have one) and otherwise freshen up gaskets and the like. Don't forget to replace injectors around 75K....that lack of a catch can from the factory goops them up along with the intake... Trully one of my fav engines that Mercedes/AMG Ever built....also in a great chassis here w/ the Best seats ever offered in a 164. GLWTA! Jono
@Jim_Rosenthal These fit narrow/standard body 124's perfectly. 036's, no. You would want the 17x8.5 for your car Jim. These narrow body sets are getting harder to come by fwiw though!
Fita anything with factory SLS.
Again, a bit on the clarification...the front spoiler fits a Gen I (81-85) euro front bumper...the rear spoiler fits a Gen II (86-91) euro bumper.. Am I correct in the above or no? Thank you!
If you want a Reliable R230 this is the one to have! Awesome combination, beautiful example at that. Glwta!
Can we get close up photos showing each grouping of lug bolt holes?
@amgpremergersome have it embossed before, some don't...and even post merger not everything gets a stamp. There's no continuity other than discontinuity..:) That much I can at least promise!
I've got some period bits floating around the shop here, Coupe at that and they are Not stamped. Also, I've never seen a foam 124 ducktail. Always plastic/fiberglass for anything stick on if you will. Pretty spectacular find IMO, box and all. GLWTA!
Any shots inside the expansion tank? Photo 67 looks like it has some oil residue.
I've had my hands on these personally, they are in Beautiful condition! Proper BBS is hard to beat and they look the business on an 036 or R129. I will say this in regards to removing the tires, I'd leave them there just to Protect the wheels from uncaring shippers.. Some thick cardboard front and back with all the tire to serve as a buffer will help ensure they land with out issue. I've shipped a LOT of wheels over the years and for me the added expense/weight is worth the peace of mind. GLWTA DW!
Congrats @Chester :):):)
@benzgardenstock single piston FWIW.
Hi everyone, I'll keep it fairly to the point. Car is all there, doesn't look to have had much if anything done since Before 2004 (tires are from 1998) and a lot of the time it did spend was outside. Corrosion under the rear window is extensive. It's going to require removal of the hat tray assemblage and a new rear window. Neither of those parts exist. The fender wells in the rear have some pretty serious Holes as well... I did NOT dig into the visible rust on the fenders, not my car not comfortable pushing/pulling/chipping away at things. Fuel tank and fuel system have been ravaged, not surprised. My phrase of late with a number of cars I have been PPi'ing has been 'everything needs something, but some things need More'. This car falls under that heading. You won't leave a single aspect of this car alone in an effort to bring her back to former glory. All that aside, again she is all there and the real deal. If you budget under six figures for a resto you're not doing the car justice IMHO. I'm watching closely, I do have Everything here that would be needed to sort her out at least. Also, Kudos to Marco for watching this beast of a car for years and having the wherewithall to go and snap her up. He's a great guy based on our time spent, a pleasure making your acquaintance sir!
We'll be swinging by to pay this car a visit on Thursday. Should be Fun:)
oooo, I'll be in Lexington next week, would like to come by for an in person look if possible.
I'd of put it @ 40G but that's just my take.
that's one of the cleanest S124's I've seen in a Long Long time. Door pocket are about my Only gripe that will actually take more then a minure to rectify. ..No way this is selling @ 18G, but hopefully who ever does end up with this car cares and maintains her properly. GLWTA!
Photos of the underside? The rear brake discs Clearly show a goodly bit of rust, want to be certain the rest of the under body isn't similarly afflicted! Thank you:)
Takes a bit more then just a crank, but that's ok;) Buyer either did himself a solid or a major disservice. Winning bidder will find out in very short order I'm sure! Fingers crossed for you!
Ahh, eberspacher heater instead of the "normal" webasto. Guess that's why it's installed @ such a peculiar angle relative to the others. Neat option, they often do Not work....does this one function? Thank you! Jonathan
Considering the Value on the table 5 vs 6.0 taking a few minutes to measure stroke a few times is really the way to go. Even if your measurement isn't Perfect you'll know if it's over 85 mm or not by any significant amount. Having two people helps. You CAN do it with the fan clutch on from under the car, but if under isn't an option you'll need to remove the fan clutch.
Car looks sharp on top. Would very much like to see some of the underside as well if possible! Also, is that as clean as the calipers get? Any chance of someone measuring front brake disc thickness. I can see the lip in the flash on a few photos. Thank you!
The Silver Arrow that's Worth owning!! GLWTA, these are about as good as an R129 gets.
@AMG5pt4heyyyy buddy! :) Get off the site and go finish something so you can do my rear main seal...oh, wait...that's me, Bye!
@Shyk1965 that's a contradicton of terms, but be that as it may...with enough spacer I suspect that yes, these can be made to sit properly on a WB C126.
Looks like stock Euro logs, but if the seller would kind enough to open the oil filler cap and push the focus down to the rockers we could see if they are solids (with clips) or not. That would answer the "any motor work" question as the Vast majority of work consisted of solid lifter conversions and headers. Would also be nice just to see how the inside of the engine looks. Didn't get a chance to go through all the invoices, but has timing chain/tensioner/rails been tended...or at the least, rails and tensioner. Ty!
Any plans to demonstrate the pano roof and keyless go all working as it should? Bladders in the PSE system/seats still working? Just to double check, ya'll changed one control arm and one ball joint? MB stipulates items of that nature are always to be done in pairs FWIW. TY!
Both of those cars also run reasonably high offsets. The overall height/Diameter of the wheel isn't the issue with the appropriate sidewall height, These will Not fit a 208, nor a 124, 129, 126..you'll need DRA spacers that convert from 12mm to 14mm inorder to be Safe. So if someone does want to go down that path, budget for said spacers, they're not inexpensive. 211, 219 AMG's don't work either. Client had us try to fit a set just a month ago...by the time they're far enough out to clear the brakes you're sitting 3/4 of an inch past the fender. As mentioned, I've spent a lot of time with these wheels and working to fit them.
Fit any mercedes is a Stretch... they are a 14mm lug bolt hole with a VERY high offset. You want to be Careful as 140 wheels do Not swap between chassis with out getting frisky. BTDT.
Would love to see this come stateside but the logistics of getting a JDM Mercedes from 07 across the boarder have me a bit concerned. Any insight?
@RufYellowBirdBrunos 500E with lots of Renntech and a few Blue Ridge goodies for a solid Finish. Bob Snodgrass used this as his daily for quite a while before his estate sold her back in 02/03.
Dash is free of any cracks/hints of cracks?
These are a Lot of fun, and 1/2 the price of an AMG...:)
@AfifjYes, it will work. Per any stand alone conversion I Strongly reccomend that who ever you are...Book time at your most proficent tuner/dyno in the area. Street tuning EFI only takes things So Far.
@AfifjAll 560's use CIS/E. Only difference with your euro vs US is you May have an 8 pin EZL with knock sensors, intake air temp and more more adjustments available via trim plugs on both the KE and EZL systems. Likely have an exhaust temp gauge too which is nice for those Looooong hard runs...:) K jet/warm up regulator cars stopped in 85.
Having spent some time in/under and around this one I can say the CO has always been exceptionally Easy when it has come to tending to any and all things, be they current or preventative. A large percentage of 221's are ridden hard and put away Wet. This is NOT one of those cars. The next owner will be very happy.... My advice to the CO was that he Not let this one go, but that's just my take. GLWTA:)
@benzgardenquad cams are the most Fun...:) Had the pleasure of experiencing our first 6.6L version here recently. That was entertaining esp w/ a 3.27 in the rear. Fellow was feeling frisky when he ordered this one! GLWTA, bringing these cars Back is a major ($$$$$) endeavour, someone will do Quite Well here:)
Wish we had more photos of the front end/fenders etc... Headlight surrounds/washer covers/pass fender all seem to be a bit out of sorts with one another. You mentioned having tended to paint work @ the rear of the car, any particular reason the sunroof wasn't tended at the same time? Was this car ever verified that the catalysts actually have Something left inside? Exhaust sound mighty frisky if they are still intact. Underside looks farily unmolesed minus the LPG/Exhaust mods but at the same time ALL those bushings/bits/links and ends all appear to be original . Did y'all install the tires or did it come with those? Never heard of them state side~ Very cool car, but I fear for her overall level of Needs to be on point. Commitment will be required.
Cool car, always dug CD's work. That said, again like the last euro 560 that went through here this is NOT a 300hp ECE/822 option code car. Once more, 270 is your Best case scenario with out tri ys and an unknown camshaft version.
@Nineelevenwerks Number is direct to me. Between 10-12 would be great as I'll be sitting in the waiting room while my wife gets lasiks;) I'll look for your call.
@Ali63We have a couple different cams that will run on CIS/CISE and still work with out getting into semi/full stand alone. Headers we have on the shelf. Diff, no problem. Bergwerks First gear start modules are Long gone, but we have some options. This car should already have FGS w/ the E & S switch FWIW. If you really want to make in snazzy we can do a period Getrag 265 swap :)
@Nineelevenwerksyes, we can. Cast tri y headers have become more difficult of late but AMG tubular is an option and we have multiple sets. Ring me up if you'd like to chat Further:)
Pretty car, but she's not a 300hp/822 ECE. No tri y and no hot cams IME. Best case is around 270. Would have Really liked a proper set of underside photos.
My wife will be Happy :-P
I've watched Tech's with considerably more experience then I take those side seals and bin them with regularity. If you don't glue them in place at this point they never stay. Guess it's destined to come here, I've got a few extra sets sitting out back! I'm satisfied with the originality of the car, should be an Exciting day :):)
@AMGHammerthe hose used was a bit underwhelming for Sure. Modern anerobic sealants have proved Useful on those cludgy 90 degree fittings and So far So good such that I can leave the originals with out major issue in an effort to preserve etc... I like to double/marine style clamp the lines for good measure as well, never hurt!
I doubt this Hammer has had it's quad cam engine "upgraded" with incorrect stampings, genuinely I'd be shocked. Checking the 6.0L displacement isn't Hateful on this example with the removable lower sump...unlike some of the earlier cars with SL one piece lower pans. Cut a plastic straw to 100mm and see if it Fits. Great time to tend to the oil level sender if thusly equipped...Worth swapping the factory orings for VITON if you want to Impede it's failure in the future. Trim could be painted or Not. Entirely at the original owners discretion and documented cars have come both ways. As for the grommet, with out going and Looking (which I may do later) is the one that's "missing" one of the drain grommets with funnel/hole at the bottom? I Think you show the other side in your photos, 3742 and 3743 respectively. Regardless, I don't see this car rusting out anytime soon...esp when you consider the lengths MB went to rust proof these cars. I can say with some certainty that I very much Doubt she'll be thrust into daily driver duty, but that wouldn't suck if it did!! I've wondered for a Long time why these cars aren't worth more, a lot of talk of the worlds fastest cars Road and Track. Everything on that front cover is a 1M$ car except One. Go figure...but I feel like we're on a road to remedying that outlier...:-D
I gave up explaining my cars to non car folks a long time ago;) The flash of a Widebody is fun, I've got one that I'm restoring so i get it...but I Love the stealth these Hammers provide. If you know you know, it's an exclusive little club...:-D
@Retrophit I look at them and see Tutonic mastery and fall in love every time. A nearly 40 year old design that still looks Crisp and Tasteful, never mind it is Exceptionally functional as well! Couple that with the underlying anger that is a DOHC M117 and these cars are like No other AMG. Driving them is very much it's own reward on multiple fronts.
Just an aside, but this year at The Bridge Coucours there will be 6 Hammers on deck and I'll surely bring this one in addition should things Work out! That said, if she doesn't come home to GA I hope who ever is the succesful bidder will be willing to come and attend. Sept 17th FWIW.
@NYCdriverone of the Coupes that was built is Very much gone, others are still MIA.
@DW168every car they sold was a-la carte. Some folks went whole hog inside/out/under etc and others not so much. All to taste!
@AMGCPEwhen something is grossly underpriced what's the difference IMHO. I know the Real numbers are still a waaaaaays out yet. Good luck to All!
If I had a line on this car prior to it being here it Wouldn't be listed here. I sold a sedan for multiples my current bid, if you don't feel as though there is value at this price point or above that's fine. I know the value of the car, it's a Lot more then where I am so for the moment I've enjoyed bidding (w)124 and (color code)199....my apolgies if I've offended your sensabilites in the process.
Anyone curious about the nuances of Hammer ownership and restoration entail I'm happy to enlighten/inform. Currently we have 5 of the 13 US Hammers here at the shop, and one of the only 2 Affalterbach built 5sp/Getrag cars, the latter we are in the midst of a complete overhaul of the M117 DOHC engine. Ping us here or give a ring, 404.805.1357 jono
This colour really is gorgeous in person...
Congrats on a Spectacular W211, Well Bought!
@matt19hsc I'd love to give this one a Pre Purchase Inspection, she looks to be Spectacular!
She's a Bit high from factory, but that's a fairly simple adjustment away. Most of the 6.9's you see are riding on their face...so 'factory fresh' will look abnormal. Similar problem to 126's..especially the Coupes. Beautiful 116...I started out with the Marque in a Very tired 79 280SE....still enough Car left @ 400K+ miles to have me fall in love...and here we all are some 25 years later. GLWTA Sir!
Hey, that's the Right Colour! I bet this is a Hoot to drive... Only better with an extra 8/10's of displacement;) GLWTA, will be watching this one closely.
Would have been Wunderbar to see the head bolts and intake had been tended to during her tenure...not that they All pop bolts but still in the range. All the intakes do give way... magnesium is great but its a frisky bit of material. I suspect with the front struts having given way, the rear bags still look to be original along with the shocks, no? GLWTA
We tend to a Number of 230's....this is particularly nice example. Her current custodian has always given us the freedom to tend to any/all issues...big or small. GLWTA, who ever takes this Cab home should be very happy about it!
Oooo...I Like these. The 221 coupe is Sexy. One thing I've noticed, the tune in the S class equipped M156's is soft when it comes to throttle response... noticeably different from the E and C. A remap really does wake these up. One of my favourite engines in a proper S class chassis. Someone is going to have an awesome bunch of years ahead/don't understand why CO would want to let her go?!?
I've spent a goodly bit of time in/around and under this one. S class life is where you want to be....biggest hurdle is what Expense lays around the corner. Beauty of this, we Did all that and you're Good To Go. If someone should be lucky enough to grab this up-to-date S they'll be a lucky one. GLWTA...if anyone wants to reach out to us with questions on specifics regarding service I'm happy to answer.
Well damn, that was a Solid Buy! Interior alone it worth Easily 2/3's that. Well bought, happy motoring...!
Well this is still just Silly cheap!🧨
I'm certain this car is a blast to drive...even provincial 124's/201's with a manual are utterly transformed... Couple a proper trans with an rev happy/cam'ed up M104. Awesome. Curious, any record of the head gasket having been done yet? Per all M104's it's when not if. On the plus side, if it Hasn't been done and someone should be worried about parts availabilty for the odd sized engine we offer MLS head gaskets in a myriad of bore sizes...added bonus of once an MLS is utilized headgasket failure should be all but eliminated. Love that the AMG airbox is still in place, and even more so a car with ASD. Very rare option and offers 100% lock @ the differential. Greatly improves driving dynamics. Beatiful example of a mid-merger AMG with VIN/Data card verification...hard to beat if you're a Driver who wants a 3rd pedal. GLWTA!!!
Museum quality...I'd likely toss a new chain tensioner in Just for good measure/peace of mind any time I turned the key. For Long term storage Redline makes an ester based 20/50 with an additive package that will prevent the cams and rockers from eating themselves...added benefit of being Stable for many, many years. GLWTA, Spectacular 👍👍👍
....what I get for driving to FL while auctions end:-/ Congrats @w124 she should be a Rip!
I like to do bolt JIC simply because the cost Before failure is under half of what it costs post.. That and it's nice to not have to Worry about it. Tappets can be purchased direct from INA very reasonably..but if you like trick bits the DLC coated M159/black series tappets are spiffy. While doing bolt it's the perfect time to update the breather to the latest and greatest..as well as inspect the magnesium intake for any metal degredation issues etc.. If you have the Time available, taking said intake apaprt and getting it freshly ceramic coated will Greatly increase the life of all the metal/static bits. These are Awesome cars, we take care of two here in the shop.. I Will say the S comes with a very docile factory tune and they Really wake up when the ME is re-flashed...that and nothing sounds better then an uncorked M156/59! GLWTA:)
These are the same brakes that was on one of my W124 E60's, so I'd say they were perhaps making the switch sooner then otherwise expected... At the same time my Renntech SL72 has the Alcons and it was built in 95... Much like AMG I imagine some of the builds boiled down to What was available Right Now. GLWTA, cool car..I'm sure she's a rip!
these GT's are spectacular. I know most everyone goes all Silly of P-cars but I'd take this over that 1000X over. Time capsule of a GT. I Do hope her next care taker takes her out and Runs, that's what these girls need!
this is a Beautiful colour in person. Interior has aged very well especially for a colour which typically Does Not! Some time with a Rupes Nano would make the already gorgeous wood on this car utterly Pop to a whole other level. ...Even the external anadized trim is still black....confirms she never spent much time outside in the sun. 113's are a little down on personality compared with the 119, but the reliability and ease of ownership is hard to beat...one of the Easiest engines to service an M113 in an R129.
This is an Awesome car for someone that will wants to get lost in the minutia of Inch Perfect. All the bones are there and they're Strong. Spending evenings/mornings with beverage of choice Qtips and microfibers will be most rewarding. One tidbit for who ever her next caretaker is, M103's run a Lot of seat/spring pressure in their drive train. A 20/50 with the zinc and phosphate levels of Old will help keep all the internal bits happy. For us, we use Brad Penn Racing with excellent results here in the shop. GLWTA!
Still stealing it in plain sight monies this!
yall are SO Close!
@MSerpeNope...just mail it in....It's Easy...;-)
@ProdigalPetrolHead You can always go the Vermont route, even Easier then Montana..no shell corp required, cars old enough will only require a bill of sale, some taxes paid via check and a couple of forms. Keep your title and get a VT licence plate and reg back...:)
Looks like Paul is the Lucky fellow today, Congrats @paulmarianetti !
Fine day for a Widebody!
Ah, the paint metering of the wide body...an excercise mired in mild futility....but thanks for the Effort;-) FWIW, these are Always thick, when the flares are added Smoothing is required and that's always done with bondo. The WB SEC's are typically fatter...and the smoothed in duck tail 124's we have seen readings over 100 mil. Exciting day, will be Watching...would have loved to give this one a full and thorough Sorting, see how she runs against my 3.4 with a stick!
Finally getting some Attention...!:)
well this is still Silly cheap for what she is/exclusivity factor!
Fish with the Score...Very cool truck for Not very much $$! Well Bought: :) Congrats.
Thrilled to hear the original airbox was not lost! The dual intake box is Very much an AMG period piece...even with the dryer vent hose feeding it:-P
@selski I can't imagine it's any worse then making long since NLA parts for Pre-Merger AMG's...! In many cases Improvements can be made after 20 years of R&D is applied...;-)
Easy 300+K mile car with reasonable maintenance....killing M112's and 722.6's take a spectacular amount of neglect! GLWTA:)
My S320 has rolled over 300K, these are Spectacular daily drivers...and the Best colour to boot!
She came through Garage Current...That's awesome. The OG seller of spectacular Pre-Merger cars in Japan...I know I've got a calender or two of theirs here at the shop. That CIS-E M104 is an Angry little runner especially once you get them on the pipe/over 4K... These present their power in a far more Engageing manner vs the later LH/ME 3.6L AMG Engines. Euro only/Common AMG mod oil cooler and the .5 trans will make high speed Runs all the more reliable And enjoyable! ...do wish she had a proper muffler, rasp is fun for an afternoon but I'm not 17 any more. Would have loved to know what drivers are in place to go w/ the Denon HU, copper chassis proper SQ unit. GLWA, she's a Looker...!
Current owner just popped another kid out so looks to be at least Semi viable in his ability to procreate.

GLWTA DW!

While doing bolt it's the perfect time to update the breather to the latest and greatest..as well as inspect the magnesium intake for any metal degredation issues etc..
